    So many good shows,

    Border Town - Finnish.
    Marseille
    Witnesses - both are French
The Bridge - Swedish - Great show.
    Line of Duty
    New Blood - both English
Shetland - no idea what language it is - turn on sub-titles.

I quite liked "Hit and Miss". Chloe Sevigny plays a transgender contract killer who is trying to balance her work with trying to raise a family in rural UK. Good combination of humour, drama, politics and murder. Only 6 episodes so not a long term commitment.

    Ozark is very good.

TV is will rot one from the inside out and one shouldn't watch it, esp. binge watching.

That said, we really enjoyed watching The Americans (v. dark and v. explicit, but great storytelling, character development, and exceedingly interesting commentary on family, country, American life, etc.).

And, we recently started watching Twin Peaks (wowza: weird, but interesting!)

We also loved watching the miniseries Stranger Things, but having been born in 1985, we're technically millennials so YMMV. Though the show is set in Indiana, the writers are from Durham and the named intersection in ep. 1 where a kid disappears (not really a spoiler) is where the Tuesday night ride starts.

For something lighter and fluffier the Great British Baking Show is really fun.

+1 for Ozark. The lady and I are not big TV watchers, but over a very rainy weekend we noticed this one and after the first episode were totally hooked. Beautifully shot, well-paced and very engaging story lines. It's a moody one and while it would certainly make a good binge-watch, the story is succinct enough that you won't lose your bearings if you don't watch it all at once (I'm looking at you, Game of Thrones).

I just saw that actor from Silicon Valley walking down my street today. Thomas Middleditch. He had a nice suit on and looked very much like himself. I think I was the only person who noticed him, and I don't even watch the show.

Me. It's a great show, and it's terrifying that some people seem to be laying the groundwork for it to become reality.

    Regarding some recent suggestions:

Ozark - very good indeed. A friend of mine worked on the costume design!

Handmaiden's Tale - SO good. I have the book, it was assigned to me in one of my english courses at college. I'm pretty sure I didn't actually read it though, I couldn't remember anything as we watched the show.

Narcos - If you liked Ozark, you'll probably like Narcos. Season 3 just came out, it looks great so far, we're two episodes in. Based on a true story too, which makes it more interesting.

Silicone Valley - Love that show, it's my kinda humor. The wife doesn't care for it.

Man in the High Castle - we liked that one too

The Americans - Yep, liked that one too. Funny how you find yourself rooting for the enemy

Great British Baking Show - The wife started watching this recently, I've seen a little, and I have to say - it's pretty awesome! I know nothing about baking FYI. They don't bother with a lot of drama BS, and the contestants all get along and even help each other out on occasion.

EDIT to add :: Oh yeah, for you fellow 90's kids, Fresh Off The Boat is really fun too. It's on one of the major networks, but you can stream it on Hulu.

The Americans is excellent, forgot about that one.
The king of series imo is still Mad Men. It´s the one that took TV to a place better than movies.

Mad Men is excellent. My wife and I watched it while it was on TV, and for one of the episodes the description in the guide was just "Don has a problem." We still laugh and joke about that.

For funny feel good (not sophisticated) network sitcoms you can't beat Parks and Recreation and The Office. Big fans of both.

I'd argue that both of those are subtly sophisticated. I'm also a big fan of Parks and Recreation, and am continually struck by (1) how much true comedy Pohler manages to squeeze into a "mainstream" comedy and (2) conversely, how much real emotion she squeezes out of a rather absurdist comedy. That's a really tricky balance.

Just watched the first several episodes of the final season and, given the gimmicky premise, I was impressed to see that balance hold.

The great thing about both The Office and Parks and Rec is the characters. Both shows, the more you get to know them, the funnier they gets because there's so much little stuff you'd miss if you don't know the characters and their background. Both also have some GREAT quotable lines.

    Ron Swanson is my hero.

The Swedish version is MUCH better. It really is.

The thing with my watching all of these foreign language shows is that I actually watch TV now ( you have to to read the sub titles) as opposed to just having it on as background noise.
