Flair pull this morning kinda rocks my world. The roads are iced over, fire is already roaring in the wood stove and the ing trainer beckons. This and this place make it more palatable.

Well, do you dig the Flair and how much?

It’s a really well made and well thought out piece. I’ve pulled about 10 - 15 shots with it so far and I’m figuring out how it functions and fooling with grind size. It is my first experience pulling shots and I’m pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to get a passable shot. I’ve spent the last year with an Aero Press for my more concentrated coffee which was a fun way to learn how the different variables effect the final product, but I think this will be a great way to take the next step into actual espresso. I considered getting a Gaggia for the steam wand, but this seems like a better way to learn the process.

My biggest takeaways so far are how easy it is to get great crema and how easy it is to choke the machine. I have a feeling those two things are closely related. I’m using a Capresso Infinity that I bought last year. Review reading makes me wish I had gone nicer out of the gate, but using it I’m happy and I’m able to choke the Flair with what I feel is a light tamp and far from the finest grind (3 clicks from the end). I’m also surprised with how light I need to tamp; according to my scale it was about 7 or 8 pounds. Ill give some more feedback when I’ve used it a bit more, or when my hand stops shaking....

You are describing my experience as well. Also, it sounds like you are using fresh grounds. I have to adjust the grind as my coffee ages and yeah it is really easy to choke the pull and 17grams is "just right" ;)

EXACTLY. If I ever pop for a quality machine than I'll already have graduated from school.

FWIIW The Flair reminds me of a what a espresso machine might look like if it was deconstructed to it's most essential functional rendition.

I'm getting good at this. Some of my best work. Ethiopian blended with C.R. beans. Stopped it just before it rolled. Gonnnnna be amazing.
