My partner went to LA last week and brought me back some beaned goodness from a few different roasters. The stuff that came from Verve was fantastic. It was an Ethiopian blend they had titled Mersha Mersha. It was super fruity. They claim cherry but I got a ton of blueberry out of it. I thought it was best prepared through the aero press but it also made delicious shots through my Flair. I have a few more to review but the stuff from Verve really blew me away.

I wasn't sure if I was buying lobster, bitcoins or coffee..."market price" was a first for me in a coffee shop.

I'm thinking it depends on how onerous is the Barrista that particular day.

Sorry - what the heck is a pour over? Like a comb over but in liquid form?

I know pour-over uses a grind thats different from all other coffee options. Just as the espresso grind is different from drip grind and different from a French press grind. That’s one reason you see multiple grinders behind the counter. They’re set to different courses. Also, pour-overs benefit from a different roast.
So, me thinks it has everything to do with the bean. They’re buying a special roast from someone running in small batches.

    That’s my semi-educated guess...

I saw Ari Shapiro in the shop while I was there so I figured that they were doing the market rate thing in order to help compliment and maintain the hipster vibe.

i've been avoiding the home roasting gig as much as i can, but lately, my local store has been getting some rather old beans...still, i really don't want to get into roasting. randomly i stumbled across what is perhaps the best resource for beans that i have found.

    https://www.tradecoffeeco.com/

first order arrived after 2 days, shipped 2 days after roasting. pretty much perfect.

I'm on a quest for the most coffee-esque coffee ice cream I can find.

O'Connell's Turkish is the most recent entrant and is pretty good, but I think I can find something a little less sweet and a little more joe.

    Anyone have any faves?

I'll make it better for you Matt...try an Affogato...one shot of espresso over vanilla ice cream or vanilla gelato.

Ha, I know these well but I'm looking for something cold out of the freezer on random nights.
There's a spot in Arlington that makes a nice one (Boccato) that I get occasionally after a ride.

Also- I've been to Eataly in Chicago probably two dozen times but never thought to see if they serve affogato. The coffee and gelato counters are close to each other so I'm sure they do.

Talenti Gelato is pretty good, and the containers make excellent storage jars for whole beans, liquid-y recipes, chain cleaning or small parts.

I stop by this shop about once/month on my way to a client visit and the owner payed this little joke on his wife in the form of the "free coffee tomorrow" sign that was only visible to the drive-up customers. She refused to work the drive-up for then longest time so after she finally succumbed, he hung the sign so that the customers could see it but she could not. It took her a few hours to figure out why people were asking about the free coffee day and the sign has become a fixture.
