My pal Emily and I had planned on getting head tattoos together since junior high school. We finally met up after 25 years in Austin to catch up, see Jesus Lizard play Austin City Limits, eat barbecue and get our heads tattooed.
Mark Van Ness did this thing freehand. I’ve always loved Persian Islamic art and the style lended itself well to Mark’s west coast American traditional/Japanese mashup approach to tattooing. He free handed this Angel Gabriel- no stencil and just a few reference pieces I found and showed him on a cell phone.
Jibral is of course God’s messenger to man in Islam and Christianity and Judaism. Anyway- this tattoo has a spiritual significance for me that even though it will most likely not be visible until the rest of my hair falls out- we kept it within the thickest part of my hairline- i love it and think it’s beautiful.
Yes it hurt.
