Canada Goose (The Brand) is pretty pretentious and high end, not something that I've ever seen serious alpinists wear into the mountains. Canadian goose (The Goose) is really nice for certain applications. People talk about its susceptibility to rain, but frankly, if one is experienced and going somewhere needing a goose down layer in the first place, one is never going without a waterproof shell as well. As a result, the only issue about Canadian goose down is if you sweat enough to soak it.
Beyond that, the newer synthetic fills actually breathe better than goose down. So if you are working out hard and sweating, synthetics will not only keep you warm better but will breathe better as well. With synthetics it becomes critical to pick interior fabrics that are chosen for breathability as well rather than for smooth feel. Brands that go for the most stylish jackets, whether goose or synthetic, tend to have fabrics that don't really help the performance of the jacket. Go for Pertex or higher-end proprietary fabrics (such as Arcteryx uses), and you'll like the result a lot better. It takes a lot of elements to make a really successful jacket.
