Intro from the article: If you think Donald Trump is wrecking the republic and wonder why so many Americans can’t see that he is, you may be asking the wrong question. What if they see the same thing you do and happen to like what they see? What if the deficiency you’ve been ascribing to a lack of adequate insight, information, or alarm is a lack of something deeper, a vacancy mirrored by but hardly confined to the president’s stare?

An article that seems like it is about dogs but ends up being a teaching example about probable cause. At least I had an "aha" moment while reading it. Might already be clearer for others here.

I read the headline and thought immediately about Colorado and how we've already dealt with this. Then read the article and ... yay, us. (Disclaimer: I'm a Colorado LEO, albeit a homicide and sex crimes detective who hasn't worked a drug case of any kind in years).

    Intro from the article:

"The popular telling of the Boston Tea Party gets something wrong. The colonists were not responding to a tax increase. They were responding to the Tea Act of 1773, which granted a tea monopoly in the colonies to the well-connected East India Company. Merchants based in the Americas would be shut out of the market.

Many colonists, already upset about taxation without representation and other indignities, were enraged. In response, dozens of them stormed three ships in Boston Harbor on the night of Dec. 16, 1773, and tossed chests of East India tea — “that worst of plagues, the detested tea,” as one pamphlet put it — into the water.

A major spark for the American Revolution, then, was a protest against monopoly."

We're bitching (and rightfully so) about Russian interference in our election. Perhaps it's time to stop our many decades of doing the same, and vastly worse, to others?

The Guardian article is interesting as a short term time capsule. The roots of interference and the seeds of the conflicts go back a hell of a lot farther than the 1980’s though.

Pretty much all starts with the United Fruit Company and Dole.

    Downhill ever since.

They do indeed! I wonder what percentage of the US population has the remotest inkling of what we've been doing and why or, to go back to the 70s/80s and Central/South America, what the School of The Americas was, and what it was about.

Tell you this for nothing; if another country had been doing to the US what the US has been do a whole bunch of other countries for the past 70 years or so, that other country would have a whole bunch of US "terrorists" to deal with.

That's the US Army's School of the Americas to which I referred. Post WWII, I'm trying to think of a country in which the larger population found itself better off for US military involvement in direct combat or "advisory and training".
