Wow. Outdoors, wet location? I'm assuming these were panels with micro-inverters so it was all AC. Your friend should call the electrical inspector. BX, or whatever it is because I don't think you can get BX anymore, may not belong outside either.
Ask potential solar installers if they plan to use Romex outside. If the answer is not "heck no" then ask them to leave your property. If it is "heck no" then add it to your contract.
