Ha. Pretty much no chance of that ;)

Did my first group ride on Zwift yesterday - the Tour de Zwift Stage 1 (B Group). I don't think I was quite ready for the B Group, it beat me up. Good motivation to keep with the bunch, though!

It's pretty cool. I did figure 8 and after the first climb there's a -7% grade. When the front end dropped, it scared the shit out of me. I'm good now.

As you found out, the group ride/races are hard. Nice job. The B group is no joke.

Thanks, Brian.
I'm going to stick out the rest of the Tour de Zwift to get some good short solid efforts on weeknights when time is tight.
Next up: Tour de Zwift: Stage 3 Short Distance B Group on Wednesday, January 22 (18:01 CET / 12:01 ET).

Ditch those stupid group rides. A goodly number of participants weight dope, not that there is anything wrong with that however it's akin to taking the front on a fast group ride while smashing the + button on your e-bike. Soooo not cool.
Once you get the hang of riding your own ride start to pay attention to other riders who do NOT have "curious" spikes in w/kg. There are a metric ton of good natured folks on Zwift.
FWIIW If I ride my ride it is inevitable I'll either join a group who have similar abilities or others will find me.
** Getting on @ 8:30 EST. Innsbruck>> Achterbahn @ about 2.5 w/kg eg lazy lazy lazy pace. Put "NFS" in your last name so we can see each other.

My team, USMES (US Military Endurance Sports) has group rides at 7:40 pm EST on Tues and Thurs at 2.0-2.5 with a "fence". We're all wearing the same uniform so I'm adding a brightly colored cycling cap so I can find myself.

There is a fence??? I have not been on the torture much this year. Sounds like a useful addition.

It's a lot like a real group ride, there are regroups and people volunteer to drop back and pull up the stragglers. Once everyone is on, the pace pushes back towards 2.3-2.5. In other news, I did the sand and sequoia loop and the Climb unit was constantly moving on the rolling hill section. It took some getting used to.

The fence concept they put in is really clever to keep group ride from turning into pissing contest with the pace being constantly ramping.
It is based on the leader's pace. I forget how it works exactly but it is some like: +3% of the leader's time/pace.
It shows up as a red translucent curtain.
If you go through it, you have 1 minute to drift back inside the fenced area agin or you are booted from the ride.
I did a really easy recovery ride and it forced everyone to go easy. Of course there was a group that kept riding right at the fence, through the fence, etc. They were complaining about how it worked. All I kept thinking was, then stay away from the fence. The ride was well advertised as to exactly what the pace was going to be. If the ride is too slow, go do another ride.
Anyway...I think it was a great addition.
As @bigbill said - it does take getting used to at first.
Enforced discipline always does.

It is safe to go back in the water. Dang, I may just give this a shot.

The "ride leader" told the guys who felt froggy to drop back and then sprint back on, then repeat, for an hour. I used to do that with the computrainer, fall back 300 feet from the pacer then interval back up.

Re: ZWIFT > VS Zwifters post your start times....
Made a last minute decision to join stage 3 at 5p today. That climb being at the beginning was cruel. I'd already run earlier in the afternoon. Not a good plan. I managed to hang on and finish the ride. The avg w/kg suggest I have a lot of work to do. At least I slowly worked my way up about 100 spots. Working to find fitness and endurance again after a couple of very distracted years.

+1 on the fence being a good idea. In particular on recovery group rides.
