2021 bike budget got turned into a year-end watch splurge since I've been rather limited thanks to a bum hammy.

Couldn't pass up this Zenith Revival chrono with the "first" auto chrono movement around, the El Primero. 37mm and is a total treat to wear.

It makes sense for a foundation to own real estate as part of their investment portfolio but with the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation (Rolex) held so close to the vest, it’s pretty difficult to tell just what they are involved with beyond making watches. Not too many commercial property starts in NYC right now either and the cost to construct a 155,000sf building…conservatively $450-500/SF.

According to a statement revealed in the TTC program, since 1994 and in Geneva alone, the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation, Rolex, its pension funds and its real estate vehicle Marconi Investment SA have acquired buildings for more than 734 million francs. This very conservative calculation only takes into account the purchase value and therefore ignores price increases and real estate developments. In total, we found more than 100 Geneva addresses, including an imposing residential bar in Onex, luxury buildings above the Eaux-Vives park or an industrial building near the Ports Francs, not to mention the head office and the group factories.

When I got the watch, it was on the beige canvas strap so I swapped that for a black strap:

It came with a bracelet but I haven't gotten around to trying that out; I prefer straps for most of my watches.

The quality is very nice. It's a mechanical movement; very solid feel when winding it. There's no bezel, just the crystal. That, and the cross design on the dial give it a 70's flair. The red tip of the second hand is a subtle bit of flash.

The polishing on the case is good; the watch compares very favorably to my automatic Timex's and my mechanical San Martin.

I have been wearing it to work; can't beat it for $70. No trouble with shipping, transaction was smooth and secure.

I am so glad they exist and that Journe does his thing. The Resonance in particular is a killer watch. I've just never gotten quite get past the aesthetic, but I blame that on my mid-century modern tendencies.

I don't know about you guys and how much you have set aside for your watch budget, but in my case I think price would be the primary barrier (then, maybe the $29 shipping fee).

You can appreciate something that exists without ever having the chance to afford it with 5 lifetimes worth of work. Ain't always about the budget.

Also Journe prices are absurd these days.

True, but for me I try to keep watches closer to the "practical" end of things, as opposed to the Richard Mille end. That doesn't mean that I only wear $15 Casios (although I do have one that I use for true "beater" applications, like yard or automotive work) but it also means that beyond a certain price point I tend to lose interest.

RGM’s new deployant looks lovely. I’ve got a thing for deployants and nice aftermarket options are slim.

Also still have a thing for RGM’s North Pointer GMT and wish someone would sell their Mr Sachs version.
