If you whack the hook on a rock during the cast it will break. I fished for a good long time once missing strike after strike. When I finally took a look at the fly, the hook was gone. Just the fly and the eye of the hook left.

We use small flies so I have to be diligent about checking for bent hooks. I've lost a few nice fish before I realized the hook was open. My wife is the pro, fishing for her is like cycling for me. We might get Tenkara rods for next summer. One of the streams we fish can be straddled in spots.

This winter after I'm retired again I plan to spend time sitting around tying knots. And then tugging on them to see if that's where the line snaps. I find it annoying to be fumbling around trying to change flies fast or tie on another lure to replace the lost one and taking forever. And then breaking off right at the knot on the next cast. Parallel to changing a flat much? Yes. But knots are something you gotta do almost by feel when it's dusk and browns the size of your leg are coming up everywhere around you.

Yeah, do that then try it with a drop of super glue and see the difference !

Also, wet your line when cinching down the knot, the friction produces super high temperatures when you pull it all together

I found a picture from that trying day in the Second Meadow of Slough Creek (Yellowstone) when all kinds of things went wrong. It eventually worked out, a few fish and a spectacular day with a fourteen mile round trip hike. No bears but lots of signs and I was sporting my quick draw bear spray.

Since there's a winter revival of this thread, I'll share. The north entrance road to Yellowstone NP from Gardiner was wiped out in the flooding of June 2022. A new road was constructed on the old trail connecting Gardiner to Mammoth. Last summer, we stayed in Gardiner for a week and drove into the park to fish. What we couldn't do was fish the Gardiner River because it was not accessible. I recently emailed the Yellowstone office of the NPS asking about the Gardiner. So now, you can park near the entrance in Gardiner and walk down the old entrance road to fish the Gardiner. Unlike other rivers in the park, it hasn't been fished in a few years. We enjoyed fishing the Yellowstone near Roosevelt, but the NPS is building a new bridge, and you can't hike down from the road until that project is complete.

How about reverse fishing? 36 ten inch brown trout going in the water after an hour and a half ride from the SUNY Cobleskill hatchery. Tough ride for 10" fish in a couple of trash bags, even with the supplemental oxygen. Had to give a couple fish a helping hand with resuscitation. Old skills learned in the mountains west of Lynchburg VA. Everyone was swimming by the end of the day. Small mayfly(?) hatch and a greeting party of smaller local fish made them welcome. Hoping some of the smaller fish are from last year's stocking. My wife helped and wants to do it again in the fall. Okay then.

We drove up into the Bighorns yesterday to escape the heat. We stopped at Meadowlark Lake and worked up the feeder stream with our flyrods but only had a few rises. I think it is early for the fish to move up from the lake, but it was good to test all the gear and make a list of what we need. Last summer, we caught brookies, rainbows, cuts, and browns from that one creek that can be stepped across in a few places. The good part, it was 72 degrees at 8600 feet. We also checked out Medicine Lodge Creek SP, which is our favorite spot about 35 minutes from our place. It is still a few weeks away from being fished. It's running too fast and deep. We'll check the Upper Tongue in a few weeks, it should be okay by then. The Tongue has good browns and lots of moose-dodging. We also stopped by the Ten Sleep hatchery to see all the Yellowstone Cutthroats. The settling pond has the retired brooders with several approaching three feet. They did their job and live out their days getting fed and waiting to die.

Hitting the Ocmulgee this weekend, beyond pumped. Here's a few pics from my last time out there, last year. It was a GREAT day, between me and my buddy we landed almost 30 bass. They ranged in size....

It's the Ocmulgee River in central GA. First & second pic is a shoal bass, the third is a spotted bass. Those were the two biggest catches off the day, both caught in about 1-2ft deep fast flowing water. Sometimes you'll find them in pockets of still water next to the current, but most of the time they're IN the current. The riverbed in this area is all boulders tho, so even if the surface looks like fast flowing current the submerged rocks provide plenty of pockets of calm water for them to hang out in and wait for food to go by.
