Hiya Diane. It is a crazy small world. I grew up on the road across Mayfield from your current shop location. I spent countless hours riding BMX on a makeshift track in the woods very near or directly on the spot of your store.
How did you decide to open up in Chesterland? When did the biking community become big enough to support a custom shop there? I left the area in the mid 80s and with the exception of Spoke and Wheel in Chagrin there were no real good small shops that lasted.
Next time I'm visiting my parents I'd love to stop on and say hi.
Rob
Ha Ha Ha yourself! Ever hear of a land line? Gots one of those??? I'll hunt you down! :-)
Hey Rob,
If you were to ask me whether we LIKE being in Chesterland, it might be another story. We moved out here because we couldn't find the space we needed (number of square feet at a price we could afford) and this shopping center offered both. What it DIDN'T offer however was the truth about a lot of stuff and we almost "bought the farm" back in 2004 because the owners of the center along with their obnoxious (mild comment) leasing agent hid the fact that there would never be a sign in front of the shopping center. But, that's the story of how we got to Chesterland.
As for how the Cleveland area could sustain a custom-only shop? Many of our clients come from all over the country - some fly in, some drive in, some lived here in the past, and once in a great while, we will work "remotely". The Cleveland area also covers Akron, Columbus (which is a BIG market for us), Pittsburgh, Erie, Cincinnati, and parts of Indiana... so, that's how we can keep doing what we're doing.
All that said, things will change for 2012 - and, we will let everyone know when they do.
Stop by when you're in town!
Best,
TOC

Ah - Good Morning Vsalonistas!
It is brutally HOT here in NE Ohio (that is not a complaint, just a fact). The good news is that everything is in bloom - unless of course you have allergies then - I'm sorry.
Anyway, TOC this past week was I think an interesting show. It was about advocacy - and we had the executive directors of two of our advocacy groups talking about what is and might be happening vis a vis bicycles going forward. B(ikes Belong and Complete Streets)
On the station, just as an aside, we are not permitted ANY "calls to action" - which means we can't ask anyone to do anything. On this forum, though I hope it is not out of line to ask that you consider contacting your Congresspeople and Senator and let them know that the measly 1.25% of the ginormous transportation budget that is slated for bike/ped projects is important and not to cut it... you can find out who your representatives are AND learn more about this at bikeleague.org
Okay - she says, stepping down off of her soapbox. Will post this week's show tomorrow or Wed. Heading out for the morning "chores".
TOC
TOC, thanks for the smoke and the good call to action on advocacy. If you haven't already done so, I think an interview with Jonathan Maus of bikeportland.org might be worthwhile. His site is very active and there are lots of interesting stories from a city with that level of bike-consciousness. I love Seattle, but I am jealous of Portland's higher level of civic commitment to cycling.

Thanks for being smoked out Diane. You're a grand slam in this small bike world.
Darren
THANKS! I am honored... truly.
I was just looking at the Outspoken Cyclist's Face Book page and it's looking sorting of lonely... anyone want to "LIKE" us out there?
BTW, this week's show will be gooooood... gots a Senator and a very cool dude from Portland, OR. Stay tuned.
Have a great evening all.

Aargh:
I was hoping that I would be on with some people of no account. Then I might appear to have some value. The problem with TOC is that Diane actually gets good guests. Well, most of them are good anyway. So, don't listen live, just download it so that you can skip over the segment that I'm on. Thanks a LOT Diane.

Are you kidding me??????? You are kidding me!!!! Tom, you are an esteemed guest - stop that!!! I'm really looking forward to talking with you. BTW, you probably don't even remember me - think back - no, no, back further than that!!! Go waaaay back to the late 80's and a little store in Cleveland called LBS.
Or, maybe you remember City Bike in downtown Cleveland.
Or, maybe it's not memorable to you - I try to forget about that a lot. I like this incarnation the best... :-)

ANNOUNCING A CHANGE TO THIS WEEK'S SHOW...
Something magical happened in the recording studio last night (no the show doesn't air "live" as in "live") and we made an executive decision. This week's show consists of JOnathan Maus from Bikeportland.org and Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and some news and chat between Greg and me.
Tom Kellogg's interview is just too fabulous so, in two weeks (August 6th) we are devoting the entire show to Tom.
Wanted to let everyone on this forum know...
Hope you are not sweltering in the heat wave. TOC
