Believe it or not, the mafia is heavily involved in the production (counterfeiting) of olive oil. The vast majority of extra virgin in American food stores is far from extra virgin but blended with other oils (canola and soybean). I think counterfeit olive oils make up roughly 75% of the olive on shelves and this includes some of the best known brands in our supermarkets. It may have the color and the taste of extra virgin but most likely it is not 100% virgin. This type of olive oil is called lampante olive oil. I pay close attention to the labels and honestly, will buy California extra virgin most of the time...and I am 100% Sicilian. Or buy local if you can.
