For a casual sneaker, I've got to say there's no better than the original casual sneaker since '64, The Seavees. I love them and have far too many of them. They're super comfortable, stylish, hard wearing and can fit in any situation. I love that they're simple, super comfy and have seasonal designs. Lastly, they're affordable and are a true US size fit - their sizing guide is spot on.
My second recommendation would be Jack Purcell - they're pretty great and iconic as well.

Jack Purcells, OK. Not willing to give them the nod over Chuck Taylors.

Vans, if you can carry it off.

    Adidas Samba, or Superstar.

Anything that doesn't have a lame and huge branding or bands. Why should one accept to become a sandwich man without being paid for it ?

    Coes, Claes...there are others.

whatever African-American men in their mid to late twenties are wearing.

but i don't abide by my own rules.

i'm always wearing beat to hell random addidas sambas or samba derived skate sneakers, some hurting pumas, or a pair of dainese high tops that you supposedly can safely operate a motorcycle in.
