Baileyworks bag works very well for running through airports. I'd buy one in every size.

I would too, but mostly just to support a great company. I have a M and an XL super pro messenger and they cover almost any situation I've needed. The OP was asking about a duffel, so I didn't even think to mention the Baileyworks messengers. Easily my favorite messenger bags I've ever had.

The BaileyWorks backpacks, in both sizes, are outstanding backpacks for riding a bike and less for walking.

The MLC is a pretty decent backpack for walking. I'd give it a solid 8 of 10 just because no waist belt to get weight off your shoulders. That said I walked the width of NYC twice with a backpack full of booze in street shoes and it was comfortable.

I think we should hear this story!

I pay attention to what the pilots and flight attendants use. I have well over 1.5 million air miles on my second TravelPro 22" suiter, as it fits in the overhead bin, and can carry enough for a week on the road.

I wish I hadn't come across the Goruck GR1... Argh. I invested in a Mission Workshop bag not too long ago thinking it would be my final purchase of that kind of do all bag and haven't really enjoyed it. Too unstructured and the top access didn't quite work for me. I should have thought about it more.

However, the GR1... beautiful.

Because it doesn't add any unnecessary heft to my carry-on, and the checked bag is a bike. I don't like overstuffing the bike bag because it gets too heavy to manage. Distributing the weight evenly works best for me when dealing with two bags at an airport and then likely on public transit. And it is cheap!

Lately I've been traveling with a Mission Workshop Rambler backpack, which is great until I need three-season clothing options. (Mind you a 40+ country travel history has taught me to pack darn light.) Helmet attaches easily to the exterior. Always carry on. The bag is expandable, which allows me to fit everything for travel but dump the contents at my destination and shrink the bag down for walkaround use. I use it for bike errands at home too so it really pays me back. Would buy again.

That is what I have used for luggage and carry on for years. The bonus is that I don't really care how badly it gets treated.

Musgravecycles' post about the Goruck broke me. As I was with the inlaws in Los Angeles and smuggling a whole host of stuff back to Seoul I used it as an excuse to get a new carry on bag (so I could do some serious smuggling).

I got the Goruck GR2 which is the largest size one they have and the max carry on size. It is an astoundingly good bag. It was filed from top to toe with books (English kids books for the kid that is on the way) and all the usual carry on stuff. It was damn heavy but took it with ease. Loads of pockets for quick access to documents/ electronics. Comfortable. Minimal. Stylish.

Now I just have to save up for others in the range and find excuses for daypacks etc. I am a convert. Just a shame they are so expensive.

I have a GR1 and I love it. I use to for cycling stuff, random work stuff, kids soccer, etc. My only complaint is that I asked for black and the wife got me multicam. It's still awesome, but not exactly covert.

We travel a fair amount and it's good for what I've used it for. I imagine a GR2 is even better for muchas air travel.

The Gorucks were great bags early on, but then the company got more into running events and the packs were a bit of an afterthought. They are made outside (and I believe outside the country, at least now) and have a distinctly poorer quality of fabric than some other bags out there. There was a period when they had frequent quality control failures. I've used a couple and found that for light loads they are ok but they simply aren't sophisticated load carriers and can be outperformed by other packs out there.
