I'd think it would take a whole new (non-volvo) rear end and brakes as well.

a pal of mine makes his living repairing volvos. actually i have two of those friends. both of independent garages specializing only in volvo. the last time i had a generic question like this they advise to stay away from the 1998 EPA-driven fuel economy first-year bullshit bugs. (same thing in diesel trucks 1998). So i'd be on the watchout for any year of significant emissions bullshit changes. Often takes a couple of years for engine management systems to catch up to federal bullshit regulations. I'm not up to date with gassers, the last big diesel problem is/was 2007 with the ULSD (which kills pumps, injectors, engines, and fuel economy-thanks).
pm me with specifics 'cuz i'll forget this thread. (1994-2002 Cummins pickups is my expertise).
Lots of people do fit Ford 9" with that swap.
FWIW I have 2004 XC 70 at 103 K miles, runs like new, never a problem except wheel bearings every 40 k as someone mentioned above. Invincible in snow.
Funny that you say that WP. Way back when, my folks had a '75 245. It had the CIS fuel injection. The FI had a problem of frequently failing due mainly to flakes of the plating coming off of the metering plate and jamming into the injectors. Gotta love a fuel system that is soluble in fuel. (Wade: begin ethanol rant now.)
White. IIRC blue interior. I commuted to Southie every day one summer in that car.
I'm compelled to chime in on this one, as we have had a '98 V70 since about 2002. No MAJOR problems. Ongoing list of minor, annoying, and expensive problems. I'm really good at replacing the electronic door locks now, having had to do all four doors. Blower fan died, rear hatch latch mech quit working, drivers master power window switch- I repaired that "not serviceable" part with a piece of welding rod and some super glue. Long story short, I'd be hard pressed to buy another Volvo because of the cascade of little stuff. We have 170K on it, and plan to let our 16 yr old finish killing it.
1992-2002 cummins motors are my general expertise as well. Is this a TN thing? i have a 1993 dodge 250 with 661,000 miles on it but looks like it has 6 million miles and been dropped from a helicopter. Runs like a champ, looks like shit! I had a 240, 10 years ago with a 5.0 ford motor in it..
All this being said, i am looking to get my wife a new car and dont want her to be out in either of those.. 2003 volvo is looking better, I dont mean brand new- i figure 10 years old will keep us humble enough

AN 11SECOND JUNKYARDBUILT VOLVO - Speedhunters
laughter has no foreign accent.
Hey Nate - 1985s are pretty sweet - B230f motor, smaller bumpers in 84/85. Add to that that yours has the M45 gearbox and has a clean roof (no rails) and that thing is pretty rare and pretty sweet. Shame about the door pockets though!
I had a B230F with an M45. Bought it for $200 or so because someone had run an SUV into the back of it while parked. Sure, the trunk was a little dented--ok it was held closed with a bungee--but it was an awesome winter beater, RWD and all (once I fit snow tires).
I left it parked near my parents' house without plates when the weather got warm. One day the city towed it and I would have had to pay what I bought the car for to get it back. Foolishly I did not. *shakes fist* Do they still make Volvos? ;)
One of my former Volvos is running a saw mill in WVa. Is that so terrible?

That's good, because with the standard K-Jet, that's about all you'll get if you drop a B21ET in there. Which, BTW, is what I would do. B21ET, new front fenders, hood, grill, and rad support to get the post-86 front end, and a set of Virgos. Now we're in business. While you're at it, fix the automatic door lock wiring to the rear hatch - it breaks inside the hinge. Worth replacing before it breaks.
Converse Engineering: Home of the "Volv8"
This guy's been doing engine swaps on Volvos for a while, calls them Volv8s, or something. Dropped a 350 in a V90 for Paul Newman.
I am not who I am.
There were a few of those. One for Newman, one for Letterman, and another got passed around but eventually landed in the hands of a Reading, PA bike shop owner whose name I can't remember. I think it was supercharged. There was an article about it in Car and Driver, I think.
