Uuuuuuummmmmm - most manufactures paint the no-cut end, actually. And, there is no need for the butts to be symmetrical at all.
For instance I like to put the longer butt end towards the front of the bike which has greater impact and less triangulated redundancy - Garro.

+1 on that. You see bikes that have failed at the steering end a lot. At the BB, not so much. The headtube & fork is the litigation area of a bicycle frame. that's where you want to have extra metal.

One noteable exception on the paint rule is True Temper. Confusingly, they more often do paint the short but end however about 1/3 of thier tubes instead have the long end painted. The TT spec sheet (below) uses bold type to indicate which end is painted so you really need to verify each of thier tube against the sheet.

I assume its like this ^ also 4 years later.
I have reebst1 tube that i will use and cant see any logic as longer butt is painted and its 300mm long. Confusing.

Ill start cutting 170mm from 300mm butt and put thicker wall thickness(shorter butt) side up. Right?

Just to be clear, some part of the 300 length end will go towards your bottom bracket shell (depending on how much you cut off) and the 100 mm butt end (which is thicker and has a bigger outside diameter) will be at the top where the top tube will attach to it.

You will choose what part of the 100 mm butt will match where you want your top tube to join it. You will cut off and miter some length of the 300 mm butt end so the top 100 end matches where you chose to put the top tube. You may or may not chose to cut off some of the 100 butt end (depending on where you place the top tube to it).

I will use app. 480mm of seat tube and 150mm dropper, on top of that I think its good to have about 5mm "freeplay" for different manufacturer seats.

Mark- My story about Chi town and hills is this. I moved there for love (lasted 23 years) a long time ago. First days on the job (at Cyclery North) I asked about riding routes and hills. They said "ride up Sheridan to the ravines". So next day I did, actually went about 10 miles past their claim. Asked again the next day and was told the same. Repeated my ride that weekend and decided that the 25' drop down a gully was their goal.

This coming from the Finger Lakes where we do have hills too. Andy

5mm seems like a small window of difference between seats (and pedals/shoes/life changes...) Andy
