i made the mistake of walking past a pair of AE Higgins boots the other day and am really digging them.

they have the dainite soles, which i have on a few other pairs of shoes, they are really a very durable, good traction sole material. i may have to spring for a pair of these soon. They look right on the money, to my eye.

My grandfather was warden of the Olympic National Park and I spent summers growing up out in the field with him, whether packing mail and supplies to fire watch stations or working fire lines. He gave me a pair of White Smokejumpers that were the best boots I'd ever had, but I had them stolen from a fire camp a couple years later. I've had the itch to buy another pair. Has anyone here bought a pair in the last few years, and have you had any issues with current quality? They are expensive, but a fair bit of my disaster management is in areas where they would be more comfortable than the turnout boots I tend to use for water-related disasters. Photos of any wear issues would be most welcome.

White Smokejumpers

Not an answer to your exact question, but Dad sent his back for refurb within the last decade or so. They came back just as beautiful as you'd hope, and he was very happy. I believe it's his second refurb--he purchased in '67 or '68.

I have a thing for their semi-dress boots.

I had my 20 year old Montrail boots resoled. I figure they have a good 20 more years in them.

Did you send them back to Montrail? Who did the resole?

I had them done at Perry’s shoe repair in Nederland, CO. Took a bit over a month. It was quite expensive and if not for the sentimental attachment I would not have done it.

But they are nice and grabby on the trails now !

I have two different Danners, a pair of the Mtn Light II and a pair of the Romeo Work Boots (which are no longer in production). The Mtn Lights are MUSA and the Romeos were made in China. Both are top quality and I'd recommend the brand with no reservations.

If you're interested in the Jack II, you may also want to consider the Rancourt Byron - I have a pair of those and they're great for everyday city use. (and made in Maine)

Had a pair of Montrail Morines for 14 years but they became unrepairable. Too many rocky miles in the mountains. Took me a few months to decide what to replace them with. Don't like GoreTex in footwear 'cause it gets dirty and stops breathing well leading to very sweaty feet. Found these. Comfy and sturdy w/o the GoreTex. Bonus is very little break-in.

I'll be curious to hear what you think about them. I got very close to the same pair last year . . . I find them to be not very warm. I think my pair would benefit from an insulating insole, but just haven't pulled the trigger on a pair yet.

I don't think they're going to be as warm as the super warm pacs that Sorel rates to -100 or some such fantastically low number. The liner looks a little less than a centimeter thick, which is about half as thick as the warmest ones. So, no, I doubt they'll be super warm, and I certainly wouldn't buy them for an activity like ice fishing.

I bought these because they're less bulky than the really warm ones, which I thought would be helpful if I end up using them for winter bike commuting. Also, the sole is a ridge design rather than an air bob, so my hope is that even though they'll likely be less grippy, I'll drag less snow inside with me.

I think for a really warm boot to wear for extended periods in the woods, you'd probably want something else. However, I hope these turn out to be a good compromise for around town and occasional activities like snowshoeing.

I have had Sorel Caribou boots and I have to say, not as warm as I would have expected. And then they cracked at the toe after one winter. Personally I am done with that style Sorel boot.

But check out Baffin, they make all sorts of amazing boots that bring winter warmth to a whole new level.

I have been having great luck with Salomon Men's X Ultra Winter CS Waterproof Performance Boot. Best combination of waterproofness, warmth and fit I've found in a low drop platform. They fit my low volume feet very well with no slippage. They work great with the Hillsound trail crampons.
