The other old car I like is a 1940 Ford Opera Coupe. I'd love to have one of those with a built small block Ford and improved suspension. I understand the way to do it is to get a wrecked late model Mustang and start pulling components. I 'm not into full blown customs and big block engines, but something I regard as more balanced and drivable.

You guys are way too emotional with this Top-10 stuff. These are very nice cars you are listing, but anything custom or hot-rodded is out, let's say. Stick to 10 production cars that one way or another really and truly moved the American automotive ball forward in some capacity(s) regardless of how much they do or do not make your heart go pit-a-pat.

I call three easy ones; Model-T, Cherokee, and Corvette.

We had an Audi A6 wagon for six years. Amazing car in winter, but we got tired of all the glitches with the car—as well as the massive bills that came any time it went in for service. Bought a 2012 Ford Focus and we love it. We've gotten up to 48 miles a gallon on trips. We also just bought the opposite of the Focus—a Suburban (which has turned out to be everything I had hoped it would be.)

Old Fords tend to find their way to our place. We have a '32 roadster, a '29 roadster, and a 2N in our barn right now, with other cars at my parents' house.

There was also a rusty silver one behind the shop.

I pointed out a G550 in the city to my wife last week. She knows me too well - "what is it with you and cars that look like boxes on wheels?"

I used to own a G55. Balls out fast. Sounded like a race car when it was fired up due to the side pipes. Rode really rough and my wife did not like it so I traded it in for an ML63. Something to be said for 500 + horespower SUVs.

You have impeccable taste in cars. My dad had a '40 opera coupe a few years ago. Just a wonderful car. He's now got a '40 convertible, and has done (I think) exactly what you've described. It's for sale, too!

If you're actually building a car for Rally America or USRC competition, you should start with a clapped out stocker. You're going to throw away any current mods anyway. I have some experience in rallying, but PM me instead. Let's not clutter up this thread.

I think the mini-me head conversion yields more usable torque, which is a good thing as I'm planning on leaving the powerplant alone until I learn to drive. Suspension first!

It may, and torque is where it's at, but I'm sure the bone-stock motor can do the job too. I'd spend the money on a weekend at Team O'Neil, instead.

If I could justify it, I'd buy a Ford Transit Connect.

I have a Transit Connect. No frills, practical commercial vehicle with a lot of room. 25-27 mpg highway. Only downside for me is long distance comfort. Hoping to solve the problem with Obus Forme back supports and seats.
