TT, 30k should definitely find you something worth a damn. Most really depends on what year you want and how fast you reallllly want to go.

You can get stuff like this all day long in this range. Newer stuff is harder to work on yourself because of all the newer computer wizardry.

Or, you can go older and get stuff like this and be able to swap things around no problem by yourself over a weekend.

Ron has the right idea, get in touch with old school established vw/porsche mechanics. They always know where the deals are. If you ever find yourself in the Southwest and need one of those old farts, I have a list of guys that could point you in the right direction.

if you're willing to pass the 60k mileage mark and/or 6 years old, you'll find tons of stuff at that price point. porsches are generally very reliable (and reliably expensive to maintain). get PASM and manual 6 if you can. it will reward you. consider taking a driver ed class.

1967 2 liter. I used to drive it very fast all the time. Never had a moment. Then again I'm used to driving things that are much more of a handful :)

Anything pre-1969 were short wheelbase cars which makes them a bit squirly at speed. Not a big deal on the track if you know how to compensate correctly... for street use, it drives nicely.

Cool video of Vic Elford talking about this when he started racing as a factory works driver. He talks about the transition to the 911 from his early years and his thoughts on how sketchy driving these short wheelbase cars. I don't think he had much trouble with them =)

Sorry but I'm a huge Porsche fan myself. I'm pretty much in awe that you fit in one. Makes me start having bad bad expensive thoughts.

911s have lots of room in them. The seats go way back and the roof is high.
