    Ive got one of these,

    Casio GWM5600-1E G-Shock Radio Controlled Watch , Radio Controlled Watches , Watches , Time Zone - Sonix.co.uk

You never have to set the time as it's done automatically, you never have to change the battery and I've treated it with complete contemptand it works perfectly.

It has done the Casio strap breaking trick but that just seems to be the way it is. If you cant read it you defo need glasses.

TMB, don't start pulling some logic and reasoning in here. We're talking about watches!

But seriously, here is my Seiko 7002. I don't think there is a better value among timepieces:

    Brief update . . .

My Garmin FR60 has been in service for a whole 36 hours and it is pretty nifty. I have two rides and one run on it. The HR monitor and footpod functions are flawless. I wasn't looking for these features when I started shopping - just needed a watch - but it is cool to have my daily watch serve multiple functions.

It was easy to set up. The Garmin ANT+ grabs the data off the watch without any prompting. I have it set up to feed automatically into SportTracks, along with weight and body fat data from my Withings wi-fi scale. Day-um. Now that I'm monitoring all this stuff, it makes me want to train for something.

The one negative is that it looks kind of fem on my wrist. Something about the oblong shape. I may have to order a Seiko automatic soon. Something like Cody is sporting above, with a NATO strap. Sharp.

I have had seiko monster for a few years and have been very happy with it. Sometimes the bezel gets a little gritty with salt, but that just takes a little rinse to get out. However, it is a big heavy chunk of steel and may not look quite right if you have waif arms.

I went through two or three Expeditions before I started with the automatics...and they looked like they'd been hit with 80 grit paper after a few months on my wrist and looked like crap anytime I needed to look groomed. i kinda miss the alarm feature, but 'twixt my phone, garmin, and the oven timer, i get along fine w/o.

the divers rarely scratch and always look great. i'll start a diver thread yo.

no long after i'd get a new one.

It takes a licking and keeps on ticking? Well at least my Timex Expedition has been on my arm for about 10 years without even killing a battery. but it doesn't tick. I check the time against The official US time (NIST & USNO) about once a month and it is usually about 1 or2 seconds off.

It even has a compass built in.

    WadePatton, we are in agreement.
Having entirely separate watches for workouts/manual labor and others for more formal purposes is an excellent practice and good advice from you.
Watches worn riding, hiking, swimming, playing, and otherwise in high-activity environments WILL show scratches and wear.

I have the Suunto Core and it's been solid. There were some reliability issues with a past production run, but I think Suunto worked out the problem and the current run seem fine. I also like the fact that Suunto sells a pretty cheap DIY battery replacement kit that preserves the water resistance of the watch without having to take it into a shop or send it away.

In 15 years I have had three of these, all time fave analog/digital but they came with metal wrist band and a solid flip clasp. I live in analog time and test myself in digital time, and I love having at least an alarm. In a particularly bad cycling crash that metal wrist strap saved me from a broken arm, but could not save the rasher of bacon to my elbow or my side. The first was sent back to Timex with a thank you, the second was a backatcha from Timex, and died about 6 years ago, the third has pretty much worn down the colored plastic on the front but just needs a new battery. Love the all metal-look version, but could only find with version for a photo:

All this talk about Casio G-Shocks sent me on a lunch-hunt. The analog/digital pathfinder looks interesting. So many of these G-Shock and other sports watches look like they are right out of the daily QVC Man's watch hour (need a laugh, check it out). Some of these look great but I'm not sure I want to wear a hockey puck on my wrist.

Edit: Opps, that was a big photo, this looks like a worth successor:

Anything by Casio will do the trick. Paying more than $75 for a watch is as stupid as paying more than 1K for a bike frame.
