My house isn't big enough to get away from this made for television drama. I can only ride my bike so much and Covid has me working from home. It's bigger than Luke and Laura's wedding. Leftist public radio yesterday was remarking how lucky we were that Dick Cheney got his buddies to all sign a letter and save us from civil war. Crazy times.

I guess the radio silence means that everybody is diligently writing and phoning their US Senators to demand that Trump be found guilty?

Leaving loose, primed UXO on the deck isn't a terribly bright idea.

Perhaps chastising from a seat of ignorance is not the best use of your own time, Mr. Clay. This is not a comment on the futility of your request.

My senators are already likely to vote for removal/DQ, although the defense case still has to occur. I do wish that even though it is impeachment and not civil/criminal, that the Senators would all have rules about reserving judgement until both sides are presented. I know they are politicians and feel the need to speak to their adoring public, but I wish the "remain silent" proclamation, that is issued each day for the time they are seated for the trial, would apply for the DURATION of the trial.

Anyway, I don't think I, as a CA resident, can influence any GOP senators. The fact that they are GOP, and were/will be elected in a state that likely still has a huge base of GOP voters who are some combo of Quidiots and Trump loyalists; well, all they seem to care about is being re-elected. The months of lies that led to the attack, the threat to election integrity, and inherent threat to democracy don't seem weigh on their collective conscience.

What makes me saddest about this is not the way impeachment is playing out. I'm no lawyer, but it seems the apparent narrowness of how an article is written, makes it more vulnerable, not less; and the 24/7 news cycle influence to capture short attention spans seems to lead to a rush to get things going, long before the true extent of attack, the potential insider assistance, the lack of response has been thoroughly investigated and revealed. What I find perhaps most sad is how the GOP leaders have not more forcefully called Trump to account--it doesn't have to be impeachment. It could and can be formal and informal censure, consistently and constantly.

This is why impeachment is the wrong tool to satisfy the people (including me) who are anxious about the ongoing threat that this president and his ideology represent. Impeachment gives cynical Senators permission to only look through the political lens and close their other eye, so to speak. They can give themselves permission to say that the long-term civic issue is out of bounds.

    Colonel,
Your post reminds me of an odd occurrence many years ago.
I was a medical intern at Stanford Hospital in the mid 1980s.
It was about 3:45 one morning.
I was standing in the hallway pondering a problem I had to try to solve.
I head the overhead speaker just above my head turn on with a little click.
A very soft voice came on and said, "Dr. Thompson, Dr. Hunter S. Thompson"
    Somewhat surreal.

I thought this clip was interesting.

And this is probably the first time the following comments have been aired on the MSM networks

Nice ones. When Gore went "no mas" , he was choosing to not undermine American's faith in the electoral system. Clinton was a sore looser, undermined Americans faith, and with MSM assistance got the snowball rolling. Trump just continued from where Clinton left off.

Interesting version of history you're writing there.

    This.

I grew up in a state in Australia that had the most notorious gerrymander in our history: the "Country Party" ruled despite winning 20% of the popular vote. The regime survived until the ensconced leaders became so geriatric that even their constituents noticed. Up till then, being out of touch with reality mattered not as long as you pandered to the biases of the 20%. This was the regime that invited participation from South Africa during the worst of apartheid on the grounds that at heart they shared the same values, not recognising that these values were only shared by a small percentage of the population.

It seems Trump was cleared of all charges and could run again in 2024. I am trying to come up w/ something to say but this is so sad and dumb i am speechless.

The majority of Senate Republican's decided that their own interests were above the interests of the country. And with their decision they legitimize armed insurrection as a political tool now and in the future.

I never thought I would see the day where our leaders would so callously shirk their responsibility and effectively sell out the American experiment.

I usually stay out of the political discussions, but have to go on record as saying what a complete disappointment it is that this criminal is allowed to walk away from what he did and gloat in his victory.

So very sad now and for the future.

Yup. Staying loyal to the tribe is more important than the law or democracy. Now that it's over we can get ready for Mr Trump to start his next presidential campaign.
