Drove a 2010 A3 Quattro today. Was fun. Went to Audi dealer. Not fun. Like, huge turn off.

Drove a Countryman today (not sure why I put Clubman up there...meant Countryman). Was fun. Went to Mini dealer. Much better than Audi dealer. Only, there are no Mini's matching my criteria in the USA.

Can't bring myself to check further into VWs. The look just doesn't inspire me at all.

    C30 doesn't have the space I want.

Wondering if I should give Subaru a shot. Guess I should.

Totally different than the topic at hand but this is my rig:

Money pit but it's rad as hell. I put a 2.5l Subaru motor in it last year so it is actually drivable. Good shit.

But for a car that costs 1/4 as much, the BRZ is worthy of sharing the road.

Very very jealous of your Syncro Westy.

I hope to get a regular 1wd Westy and "pre-runner" it into a nice 2wd with locking rear diff. Winterize it and add a Proplex and it's our ski cabin on wheels.

Picked up my Outback today. Sort of stumbled upon it while looking at another A3. I was pretty damn impressed and couldn't pass up the incentives. So I'm now the owner of a 2013 Outback 2.5 Limited. More bells and whistles than I ever thought I'd have. Cavernous.

Have you driven a Tiguan? I'm wondering if they're suspended correctly (i.e. firmly) or have the oceangoing bathtub ride of a typical SUV.

We drove the Tiguan and the Jetta wagon, both 6 speed manual TDI, back to back, and the wagon drive way tighter, no contest. That was a few years ago though.

Why not a GTI or even a simple Golf? Do you really need the stilts?

Yeah, I'd avoid the whole car on stilts thing. Yes the Tiguan handles sort of better than most in that class, but any decent non-jacked up car or wagon (like the Golf, etc) is going to drive and ride an order of magnitude better. Unless you step up to something like an X3 it's going to be tall and tippy. BMW has that $hit figured out (well, the first gen X3 rode like the dampers were frozen, but they have fixed that now), it sounds like you know this. They can counteract the high Cg body roll part with stiffer springs (like the Tiguan has), but then you feel ever bump and undulation in the road. So instead of getting jostled around by soft springs and insufficient damping, you get tossed around because the suspension is too stiff to work and you get "road reading" which can be worse - and every Tiguan I've tested does this.

It's nicer than most in the class - but is also way overpriced imho. Pretty much in pricing no-man's land between the RAV4, CR-V, Forester, CX-5 and the X3, Acura RDX, etc.

Wagons rule. It's too bad the US market generally shuns them.
