My wife & I walked around our local pond last night, an urban destination with a newly paved path around the perimeter. After dinner, just around nightfall. Lovely spring weather brought a lot of people out.

I felt we were mostly successful at maintaining social distancing, but there were spots where the path narrowed that were difficult to navigate. Along with oblivious fellow citizens who made themselves difficult to avoid. Plus there were numerous runners paired off and trotting past us.

    I don't know.

I'm hyper-aware of this now, and doing my best to stay away from everyone not explicitly in my designated circle (yes, I have a very small designated circle.)

The transformation of our social spaces is dramatic. But is it enough?

I'm not going to give anyone a hard time, and I would encourage extra scrutiny in where you (not aimed at anyone specific) mingle. I've seen too many massive changes in the last 2 weeks, both at my hospital and in this country, that I'm "committing to the rut." If we're going to go through this, we might as well suck it up and commit to it. Minimize interactions.

Yeah there are idiots out there. But there are also some kids out there who get it, and are behaving admirably. I'm gonna resist the temptation and instead go after the people in power who are screwing up, and avoid punching down and alienating the younger generation.

Like this, CANCELED: Town of Darien has canceled drive-through coronavirus testing

Testing was to start today, but some neighbors expressed complaints on social media about the location being too close to their homes.

You handle that side and I'll handle the media that gives the idiots a megaphone.

Your people must have reached out at some point. Those (I know) in Episcoville (that is, some parts of Fairfield County) are Mayflower born and bred. Sweating, especially through your clothing, isn't an option. Nor is getting fat. Or losing hair. Or mixing with the help.

Part of my family said FU to the Nazis and fled. I'm not sure if they took the Mayflower, or the Concorde.

You two get a room eh?

Meanwhile we just concluded a perfectly delightful afternoon of day drinking on the front porch. Our glorious example ensnared some neighbors who maintained distance, were provided cold beers and bowls of pesto pasta with fried salmon cakes ontop.

    Pandemic? Sure, we can deal.

Pa State Governor Tom Wolf just shut down all non life sustaining businesses. Apparently a Harley-Davidson is lifestyle sustaining, but not life sustaining. It looks like I am out of the factory and off work for a few weeks. Time to wax the Airstream, ride a few two wheeled vehicles and maybe get a taste of what retirement will be like in a few years.

Easy DIY hand sanitiser: 75% methylated spirits, 25% aloe vera gel. You can add a few percent of Eucalyptus oil to make it smell better and work just as well (probably better but data is poor on the subject)*

I am working on a cheaper alternative using a calcium salt as gelling agent.

There's nothing toxic in metho any more, it's just 95% ethanol with a bittering agent and an additive to make it smell bad to discourage you from drinking it.

    * SARS CoV-2, the causative agent of COVID-19, is an encapsulated virus so the standard 70% ethanol formulation will work. You can broaden the action by adding 2% urea and 2% citric acid, it will then also work for non encapsulated viruses.

FWIW my majors were microbiology, biochemistry and biotechnology so I do have some expertise in the area.
