A single snake will clean out an entire mouse nest when it finds it. So a highly beneficial snake. Sometimes confused with an Eastern Corn Snake, but the Corn Snake is more brightly colored and has a slightly different pattern. Corn Snakes are also highly beneficial for similar reasons. And they'll both eat full sized mice once they get larger.

Since mice (not deer) are the primary vector for tick borne diseases (ticks get them from mice,) we need as many of these beneficial snakes as possible.

    Back to photos.
Thanks Jorn, but I'm afraid none of that knowledge would prevent my personal come-a-part.
While climbing a rocky ascent, I saw a fat rattle snake on the trail. The rest of the ride, every time I felt my spare tube shift around in my jersey pocket, I was convinced that SOB jumped on my back.
Spooked for days... not a snake guy.

It's interesting. Folks who hear this tale (or see the picture) are either fascinated or repulsed. Very few folks are neutral about snakes.

For the record, if you can keep them from wandering away and safe from the foxes, chickens and Guinea hens will eat ticks and lots of other crawling critters in the yard, so like the milk snake above, the also help keep pests under control.

She's the neighbor's chicken. Escape artist. No idea how she gets out. Only on sunny days though.

Not sure chickens would last long on our new property. Might end up a different sort of bird feeder. But "will eat ticks" is a good resumé.

No idea what's going on here. Seen it before. No body. Just a cleared area in the leaf litter, clumps of yanked out deer hair, and lots of hoof prints.
