there are no bagels in san diego.
funny story: when i was living in belgium i would periodically get a weird hankering for dumb american food. normally this would result in a drive to luxemburg to go to chi-chis or something.
one time i got really hungry for a bagel and i figured there are lots of jews in antwerp- they must have bagels so i headed up there only to find they didn't know what the fuck i was talking about....and i was speaking to them in my best german infused imitation of yiddish. don't try to describe a bagel to a hasid walking down th street holding a bag of diamonds is my only advice...you'llo only confuse them and frustrate yourself.
Not to highjack this...since the H&H debacle and sadnesss of the city's loss the way to make an Ess a or Tal be good enough is to first have ridden out to Acme on Gem St in Brooklyn (22.7 miles on my go to West Side/ back and over the Brooklyn Bridge/ Up Kent/ACME/Pulaski/59th St) for their open to the public wholesale price thing on Friday mornings. That fish would make any bagel be wonderful.
There were no pictures or a report of the ride on the blue Gaulzetti with 28 pounds of smoked fish in bags on the bars because it was ugly although a fabulous end result.
And, being a NYC native and having Montreal as an adopted city in later years it is a toss between the two on best bagel.
I find it hard to accept there are top shelf ones elsewhere...it is not just the water, the fauna, whatever...it is the ambiance. Sorta like in some neighborhoods the two slices go face to face in order to be properly eaten or else they don't taste right.

This reminds me. i was seeing for a while la fabrica, in gerona, advertising bagels, but they are not boiled and baked as a proper bagel ought to be. i inquired and said there simply aren't any bagel places doing it in girona. so sad that a city with such a fantastic food reputation can't do bagels
Santa Cruz Bagel Co isn't bad at all. Then again, I just got a delivery from Russ and Daughters for my birthday. I was always partial to Bagels on the Square on the 6th Ave in Greenwich Village (took a few VSalon members there one night). Had a not-bad Montreal Spice in Burlington, Vermont.
Best bagels I've ever had in my entire goddamned life were from Detroit. Sue me.

Katz's Deli is not what it used to be. Blame Rob Riener and the When Harry met Sally movie.
2nd Avenue Deli has moved from it's original location but has yet to turn into a tourist trap so it's still good. And they still have their Kosher certification which still sort of means something.
Guys.. i am talking about Katz' in Chealsea Massachusetts. The best bagel place in the world.
