and the event was even covered by the guy from Prolly is not Probably. He got a couple of my bikes on his Flickr page, but considering the amount of hipster fixie stuff he does I find it ironic that he skipped over the only bike in my booth that would make a good fixie.

Nice to briefly meet you at the show on Saturday. That copper 29er was quite a head turner! Wow! We wanted to head over to the Jackalope for our free beer but had other plans. Doh!

The owner of this frame won women's 30-35 at cross worlds. Although it really has nothing to do with me, I think it's pretty cool. Plus, she's a badass and a friend.

Ok, I'm gonna wing this answer until Rody decides to drop a knowledge bomb in here. (Please, Rody) Powdercoat is powdered polymer that is very similar to what's in liquid paint. It's sprayed on in a dry powder and sticks to the part due to a static charge until it can be baked in an oven. That's when it all melts together forming a polymer coating on the part. The coating is very durable, but it can also be pretty thick. Thick enough to make lug shorlines look kinda filled in sometimes.

Ceramic coating is a process where the part is sprayed with some sort of media of ceramic particles. The same stuff they coat automotive headers with, jet engine turbine blades and other high heat or high wear parts. It's tougher than powder, it won't burn off like powder and is usually a super thin coating. Roger at Shawnee Trail Performance Coatings said the coating is about half a mil (the actual mil measurement, not slang for millimeter) which means it's about .0005" thick. That means it shows EVERYTHING. Forget about tiny little details that paint will cover. You will see it in the ceramicoat, and also stuff you never noticed before.
The upside is that you can also forget about cables rubbing raw spots, or tiny little rock chips. Also according to Roger, the ceramic bonds to the metal in such a way that even when there is a scratch or something, you won't have to worry about rust creeping under the coating like with powder or liquid paint. When the tube is dented, the coating doesn't flake off like paint or powder because each particle is bonded individually at a molecular level. (or something like that, c'mon Rody, I need you buddy!)

The Sunday Tulsa Tough crit course goes right past my house. This year, Steve Tilford parked his van in front of my house. I was walking back with a friend who knows Steve, and he happened to mention that I build frames so Steve wanted a shop tour. He got one, and we shot the bull for a few minutes. It was pretty cool, and I got a mention in his blog.

It was great meeting you guys in Denver, and I was proud to finally come to NAHBS as an exhibitor. I'd like to thank the guys who offered words of encouragement, and especially Tim and Rody for making me feel like part of the gang.
A special thanks goes to Rody for his good advice, which prompted me to rethink what I'm doing and make sure I can keep it on the right track for as long as I want to.

I've had these aluminum tubesets that came with the TIG machine laying around for a while and I finally got bored/motivated/curious enough to do something with them. 20130526_032622.jpg

I had issues with the tubes being really dirty, even after wire brush/scotchbrite/alcohol prep. The welds suffered as a result, but I'll get things sorted out and try my hand with tubes that haven't been hanging out in a dusty attic for 6 years. I'll probably take the next set to work and run them through our aluminum cleaning process and maybe bead blast them as well. This first one is going in the heat treat oven at work, and I may even give it an alodine coating afterwards. It'll look like a Holley carburetor:)

So the aluminum thing didn't really hold my interest, and I'm back to my regularly scheduled steel builds.
