John Lobb London/St. James (the original store in London still owned by the family - bespoke)

John Lobb everywhere else (based on the original Paris store - same family but different branch - then sold name to Hermes - ready to wear)

Just a quick plug here for AE. My old leather soled Overlord's were getting really tired. multiple holes in the leather soles, heel worn down to the wood, leather dry and cracking. Sent them off to AE for a re-crafting. decided to go a little different since these are casual/bis casual shoes and pop for the blue dianite soles, make them a little more weather proof. less than 2 weeks later get the email. sweet!

Love the Bold/Blue Dainite sole choice.

I really wanted to go with the Olive Dainite on the Suede Leeds (example below - store display) I special ordered at the recent trunk show but the sales associate said he did not know how because it was too new and once he called customer service that Monday it was too late...custom order was already processing.

I’m partial to the JM Weston split-toe “Chasse” or “Demi-chasse” Derbys. The Demi-chasse is more of a town shoe, whereas the Chasse is for hunting or walking in the woods in style, like Lionel’s Lobbs.

An enthusiastic 2 Thumbs Up for AE and the re-crafting. I had badly scarred a pair of shoes in a fall on a cement staircase and they brought them back to life in about 2 weeks for $125 IIRC. Just walk into any store to drop them off. There are two locations in Manhattan I believe....one on Madison near Tourneau....relatively small shop but packed with nice shoes.

I have two pair that date back to '96 still going strong.

Do you prefer JM Weston because of quality, style, or both?

I am initially leaning towards the Alden because of quality and I already have 2 pair of high-vamp loafers and 2 pair of cap-toe bluchers that work well for me from a fit standpoint. I am concerned that the Carmina which have a good reputation may be too narrow with UK sizing and European style/fit (as well as the less expensive made in China Meermin).

Yes, that’s the one. The storm welt on the full Chasse makes for a less formal shoe imo, and the soles are super thick. I just like the fit of Westons, and the workmanship is superb. If you’re in NY, I would pass by the Weston store, and Leffot while you’re at it.

That’s too bad to hear. The last pair I bought was probably 20 years ago. And I thought those looked like the Chasse (which makes sense since that’s what they are!) but I recall you being more of a Lobb fan as between the two French makers...

I still get a pair of Weston once in a while but their basic model like the 180 loafer and the demi-chasse last about 1/3 of the time they used to. The chasse is still a tank and given the fact that they cost 3x what the other models do I am guessing is still made the way it was in the past.

Oh and Lobb is british :) I am/was a fan even though the new stuff is questionable style wise !

Is it? From my (minimal) research it appears Lobb on St. James is "British" and owned by the original family but everything else is owned by Hermes so different styles, construction, and distribution. Different companies = different products.

It is owned by Hermes but British and made in England (for the ready to wear), bespoke is made in Paris.
