Not the best image due to heat shimmer but rare to see two pairs of brolgas together like this.

I know sarus cranes but these are not those. A different bird. Interesting. Cranes are a favorite.

they will sleep near or on the porch or even against the house - warmth maybe but also safety from coyotes I think - if we let them

I'm going to need to look at that for a while to figure out why main trunk went below horizontal and then turned up. Trees are not exactly long term planners like there's an opening in the canopy over there across the brook so if I grow real fast I can outrun that maple and then turn up into the sun.

At some point another tree fell and pinned the top of this tree (a red maple I think but might be an elm) to the ground. Trunk is on the left and is split though both halves of the split remained rooted into the ground. In the process of cleaning existing paths, we removed the rotten log pinning the top of the tree, but the top had died. However the end remaining had rooted into the ground while the last branch had taken over upward growth. So we left it as is. The two other branch “trees” over the water may be fed by the roots on the left side, but really I have no idea how the circulation works here. This is in a hemlock stand and curious things seem to happen in hemlock stands. A lot of growing power in the ground.

I would have liked to lighten up Cervantes a bit, but I no longer have ready access to those tools.
