Yes, it has a black plastic grill and a fake hood vent. Its a TRD Off Road because that's the sweet spot. It's body-on-frame with an actual 4x4. Its not a TRD Pro because I'm not a flat-brim wearing dad. This is before I took off the running boards and chrome exhaust tip. $440 worth of add-on nonsense.

My lady got a Subaru Forrester because she has some goddamned sense.

My head hits the roof in a Tacoma.

That's the best trim level. Everything you need, nothing you don't.

When I got my truck (that has made many appearances in front of your AZ place) I wanted the Eco-boost engine and leather seats. To get that, I had to get a Lariat level trim which included a center console with a shifter. I'd rather have a column shifter and no console. But I wanted leather seats..... Lariat also comes with larger wheels and tires so I get around 21 mpg on the highway versus 22-23 mpg that I'd get with a lower trim truck with the same engine.

So, resurrecting this thread - I would like people's thoughts.

We have looked at various vehicles in this category and this point have driven the Rav4 Hybrid and the Acura RDX. Talk about two different ends of the philosophy spectrum. The RDx sort so feels like the blunt instrument wrapped up in grampa's barcalounger. It's off the table.

The Hybrid is really impressive but I think if we went that way we would have to replace the front seats for my wife. Anyone replaced seats? Recommendations? Experiences?

We are going to take the CX-5 out and the Ford Escape as well. Took about a 5 minute look at the Lexus Hybrid and think it is one the ugliest things I have seen.

The new VW Tiguan is coming out and my wife wants to see it as she has always liked VW seats. I have pointed out to her that the new Tiguan does not have typical VW seats - it has "US VW" seats. I am not crazed about the Tiguan since they took the old car, turned it into a mini-Atlas knocked 14 HP off the thing and sell it as "improved"

Anything else in the segment that should be looked at ? Any thoughts on the above that I'm missing??

Can you spring for a lightly used Audi allroad? All the utility, none of the jacked up handling compromises. Short of that, I imagine you'll end up with a CX-5 if you drive everything.

almost all front seats have embedded airbags now. i'm going to bet that if they do in this car replacing the seats will be cost prohibitive.

@TMB maybe look at a Subaru Crosstrek based on your other choices or the Forester? I am biased as I am on my second Subaru (first the Outback Sport which was the equivalent of the Crosstrek since it was a lifted Impreza and now a WRX).

Yup, have to get my wife over to the Subaru dealer. This will be her car, so her choice but I want her to see all of the choices.
