The Wolverines are better constructed too.

Can anyone recommend boots like the Beans Engineer? They seem to be out of season and out of stock for a long time (and they keep bumping the date out).

I bought a pair in the fall. They are great and for the money can't be beat. Go with a set from Chippewa if you can't wait, otherwise I would recommend waiting. Great boots and great Bean service.

Does anyone know if Bean still makes an uninsulated, pull-on version of their Bean Boots?



They have an insulated version on their website, but no uninsulated ones. Is the lack of an uninsulated model just a seasonal thing that will change soon, or are the uninsulated ones unavailable now?

I have the Chippewas and have used them for 7 years. I love the boots. The only issue was a heel that started to lift off the sole. I pulled both heels off, cleaned with Acetone and reglued with Barge cement. Now they're good for another 7 years.

Buy a half size smaller than your normal size unless you wear really thick socks.

i've wanted the llbean engineer boots for 4 years now. always been a little too spendy for me. also, price has gone up 1/3 since then, about $60, inflation whoa!

I stuck between the Wolverine 1000 Mile boot and the Red Wing Beckman Boot, who has either boot and what do you think?

I have Beckmans. Never tried the Wolverine's. Don't really see how you can go wrong if they fit. Just did some end of winter cleaning tonight - plenty of saddle soap. Tomorrow they'll get Sno Seal around the welting, light mink oil everywhere else, polish, and then get semi put away until October.

Edit - just noticed that the Wolverine's don't have rubber on the ball of the foot, significantly undermining their claim to being a boot IMHO.

Edit again - is that just a Nordstrom's thing?

You sure? Not being sarcastic, I switched from bomber boots to leather hiking boots with no toe cap and I'll be god damned if they don't get scuffed and let water in when hiking in the snow. I never had this problem with my old boots.

One hour in the snow and that scuff is dark with water. Sure you treat them with oil and wax, but two hours in the snow and corn snow will wear that seal right off.


Now I did just switch from Sno Seal to Huberds Shoe Grease and that is better.

Wow, Christian, I found it to be the opposite. As a true B width, the Beckmans were way too wide for me. I bought the 6 inch 952, same boot I wore years ago, for when I'm inside and don't want the lugged sole - great book at a nice price. They also come in an 8 inch version. I like the 899 a lot too, and wear it when I want the heavier, lugged sole. But man, I really wanted those Beckmans!

Sno-Seal is no good for smooth-out boots, as you've found out for yourself. I've always liked the various offerings from Pecards. You will only get your smooth-out boots to be highly water-repellent, not wateproof.

Just tried on a pair of these today. I really liked them. Went in looking to get a pair of the Dalton's, but these are more than likely what I am going to end up with. How are they treating you?

Hey, can anybody use a pair of made-in-England classic 8 eye black Doc Martens 1460s? They're a US 9.5 (maybe a 9.25), slightly small for me. I cant be bothered to list them on Styleforum or eBay, but if anyone wants them, LMK. Worn once outside, maybe. As new, basically. Free to someone who could use them.
