We used to cut filets out of the sides then put 'em back in the Tappahannock River (in Virginia) and let 'em swim away. I didn't believe that they would do so when the local that took us to his fishing hole told the tale, but they did it all the time.
At other times, we'd do the same as Elvis mentions, but nail 'em into a barn rather than a 2x4.

Lots of fun outings in VA between chasing stripers, blues or flounder in the Chesapeake Bay, smallmouth bass in the Tappahannock by Fredericksburg, big ol' cats in the Mattaponi or Pamunkey, and all sorts of species in the Tappahannock River north and south of the bridge in the town of Tappahannock.

Well, it was a good weekend for both cycling and fishing!

Fishing-wise, my son caught and released 3 SMBs, and learned to successfully cast a spinning rod all on his own, with the useful mnemonic device, "Tippy-tip, flip, throw, and let go!" Pretty clever for a five year-old, I thought. My 2.5 year-old daughter got to see her first live SMB, and declared it "cute!!!" Not sure I agree there. Getting weedy in these parts, so the next few weekends may call for getting a boat onto the deeper waters in the local lakes.

Took the day off to run some errands yesterday and dropped the Ford off for new rotors at the dealer. My son and I decided to take the hour and go fishing at the 1/4 acre pond nearby. On his third cast, he got the lure stuck, "Daaaaaaad, I'm stuuuuuck!" Freed it and went back to my rod.

On his sixth or seventh cast, I hear "Daaaaaaaaaaad, I'm stuuuuuuuck!" again. Look over, and the rod tip is quivering, the line is taut and dancing in the water, and the drag starts screaming. He reeled in a 14" largemouth bass. Catch-photo-release. He's got to be one of the bigger fish in that little duck pond.

I have found that often "antique" stores have a big bucket of rods in the back they don't know what to do with - I always ask about old fishing gear & tools.

I bought a boat. Ugly olive 12' jon boat for bass/perch/picks on New Croton Reservoir. Any NYC/Westchester/Fairfield/visiting salonistas who want to go fishing, let me know. Heck, with little kids, I'll never get on the water before 9am, so if anyone wants to go between 5am and 8am and actually catch some fish, I'll give you a key.

1st day fishing in 2014. Took the kids out in the boat for 90 minutes and didn't have a single bite. We retreated to a local lake with a nearby restroom (always know where the lakes w/ restrooms are when your fishing buddies' average age is 4) and we hauled up a 9" Lake Trout. Pretty little thing, we put him back gentle as can be.

There's a creek that flows near enough to my Mom's homeplace/farmhouse that it's always been a favorite hole. It's the place of my earliest fishing memories (camping too). It's not big or deep enough to be a swimming hole. Just big enough to hold some fish sometimes. Mom and I have taken to revisiting it recently. Last Sunday we only caught a couple and pitched 'em (recycling yo). This Sunday I took a cast net and caught a few minnows, which the Warmouth hit like a sledgehammer, while the Bucketmouth fell to worms. The balance came on worms.

Now to get my 'yak out and work in the rigging/hauling setups. and fab up an extension for my paddle.

Going to the Rio Colorado for 4 days of kayaking on the 15th, will report back about the trout status.

10-inch Redeye/Rockbass is big in this nekka da woods. two 9's and an 8.5" plus the bucket mouth for heap good eatin'. bait pictured as well- the secret is out.

Lake trout or a char?
looks like you either have lampreys or cookie cutter sharks?

pretty high confidence level it is a Char.
I know there are lamprey in the rivers here every now and then, do not know about this particular lake. There are also big pike in there but I have no idea what it tussled with before we met.

We recently bought a house in Los Barriles, Baja Sur Mexico. Our first long visit to it for a couple of weeks to get it ready for our move down this October. The Sea of Cortez is near out our front door and a friendly neighbor invited me out to try for Sailfish or Marlin, which ever occurred first. (Marlin is catch and release) No luck this go-round but next time we'll try for Dorado. I need some seafood for dinner.

Got my dads 4, he used in freshwater. I used it in the ocean and cleaned well. Still froze up. Replaced ball bearing but still runs bad. Had a 44 with the same problem. They did not like salt for sure. I heard from a carp fisher that they are cult now.
