Skip it. Not quite 3 years ago I loaded my 3 kids and wife in Brutus (our 80-series) which had at that time 380k miles on it and took off on an 8000 mile cross country trip. Ran like a champ the whole way be because that's what Land Cruisers do.

That said I have to acquiesce that a 4runner/Taco is probably a better idea...

A new 4Runner is as big as an 80. But I'm not getting the Taco recommendations. An LC can carry 8 people during the week if carpooling to soccer practice is a thing. Jack of all trades, master of none.

I'd be curious the road manners of the 80. Having lived with a Jeep TJ for the better part of a decade, while it was fine around town, on the highway it was a bit like a box tent with wheels.

The offroading ability is totally appreciated, but after awhile of deafness-induced road and wind noise, and the ride of a glorified ox cart, you begin to hope for something a bit more civilized. Thing was great on the trails though.

they can ride incredible ride when done right and very nice regularly on the road.

FWIW there was a massive difference between what my 62 and 80-Series Cruisers drove like on road even though they were only 4 years apart. The 80 is significantly more refined where the 62 was built for trails.

A 60 has leaf springs and solid axles.

An 80 has coil springs and solid axles.

A 100 has IFS with torsion bars in the front and solid axles and coil springs in the rear.

My 100 doesn't love highway travel at anything over 75mph. Or maybe I'm just responsible and cognizant of 5500lbs of high center of gravity and not great brakes. The engine is turning almost 3,000prm at that point. It feels happiest on slightly meandering 2 lane roads at 50-60mph, which makes sense given the sort of environment it was designed for.

Each prior generation is going to be a step down in NVH, but the 80 can be brought up to snuff pretty easily with more sound deadening.

I'd say the 60 series was designed for roads, but muddy ones in Africa...

This is spot-on. Also if you're gonna do an 80 that will see a lot of highway mileage put airbags in the rear springs. I'll add that my 80 was perfectly fine cruising at 72/73 but to go from there to 75/76mph out west was like driving off a cliff - our mileage dropped by 4mpg!!

Meanwhile I’m gonna just wait until my 98 4Runner achieves classic status. Thinking about new bumpers and either a khaki or USFS green repaint.
