I haven't ridden a mountain bike in 20 years, and the last year I was riding a lot, I was on first name basis with the nurses in the local emergency room (Stuart Circle Hospital in Richmond, VA, now closed evidently) and not because I was handsome and wealthy but the opposite plus bloody. So really mountain bikes are counter my doctor's orders.

I am also entirely out of the loop for what is a good mountain bike these days.

    But I want this one.

    Jorn,

I got tired of those “oh shit this is going to hurt” moments. Time heals all wounds but for me it takes longer and longer. Ride it while your still young(er)

Is that the 5010? I have to admit I was torn between that bike and my bike, which being a Jones is the polar opposite in terms of suspension. I chose to use the Jones to get back into it and see where it goes. There is a strong case to be made for that SC by someone smarter than me. A friend loves his.

MTBing vs Road riding in terms of safety ::

MTBing crashes are more frequent, but the consequences are much lower than crashing on a road bike.
You're going much faster on a road bike
You're landing on a harder surface on a road bike, and the surface doesn't give any, or move with you (asphalt vs dirt)
It's incredibly rare to get hit by a car while MTBing

Conclusion :: MTBing is way safer than road riding

Therefore :: Buy the bike Jorn

I've never gotten stitches from crashing my MTB*, but I've gotten them twice from crashing on the road.

*note. I did once get stitches while out on my MTB, but not from a crash. It was a group ride w/the local IMBA club, I was out front, went across a creek, jumped off my bike and got down in the creek to take pics of everyone else as they rode through. Then, while walking out, I slipped and fell, and my kneecap landed on a root growing over a rock in the creek. I stood up thinking "f*** that hurt!" and looked down to see a gash in my knee with some white sub-dermal fatty tissue hanging out and blood soaking into my sock. Luckily we had an EMT with us, and he had a first aid kit, so he cleaned and wrapped it up and I stood and pedaled the ~3 or so miles out to my car and then went to the urgent car clinic for stitches. They didn't do an x-ray, but I now know I broke my kneecap, because when I'm sitting and looking at my knees that one is shaped a bit different than the other.

Matt, there are many iterations of that basic design and they haul @ss.

Agreed- this one is just over the top though, in a good way.

I dive down the cargo bike rabbit hole occasionally, but ultimately I don't think I'd get enough use out of one, versus the Burley, trailabike, etc.

I was pretty serious about getting a cargo bike until Whole Foods started delivering. Now if I need more than I can stick in a couple panniers, delivery is a couple clicks away.

I love the idea of cargo bikes, but in practice I'm not sure I'd use one all that much.

In Manhattan, it has all the practicalities of a canoe welded to the front of your bike.

Though I know in Tribeca, at least a couple buildings have set aside parking for cargo bikes and luxury strollers built for twins and quadruplets.

I have twins and our Burley (plus front stroller wheel) has been worth its weight in gold. This'll probably be the last summer though that I can bike them around in that trailer. After that would be an extremely narrow window of time where it might be fun to push a couple 4 year olds around in the front basket of a bakfiets. And as for food shopping, I'd just as soon use the Burley with no kids in it.

Matt if you can live with it I have amazing low profile aluminum flatbed trailer. I got mine when the cat was making them in his garage and sent it as a D.I.Y. kit. Brilliant attachment to the bike uses a universal joint so that you can lay the bike flat. I've hauled 100 lbs like it was nothing.

I want a bunch of transparent, sonically-consistent audio cables to replace the hodge-podge of good & bad, new & old that currently tie things together.

I want 2 short coaxs from my digital sources to my DAC; a short RCA-RCA from the DAC to the new preamp, a longer RCA-RCA to the passive attenuator; and another short RCA-RCA from there to the new power amp. Oh, and short runs of speaker cable too.

    I'm thinking Audioquest.
