I dunno what to say... dudes that buy $100k SUV's may not think things like this through in their entirety. The Porsche probably left a bad taste in their mouth(s) and they moved on to other expensive SUV without a lot of thought or hesitation. Oddly, the porsche guy bought the X5 and the BMW guy (is working on a long list of M3's - and coincidentally also has a track prepped STi) bought the LR3.

my honest hope is that by now with the Macan that the bugs would have been worked out. time will tell, I guess. also a reason to wait a few years- 1st generations of cars are usually iffy.

FWIW - my boss just took delivery of a Macan. She is not a car person but had the following to say:

"I finally love my car and am looking for an excuse to drive somewhere". For reference she hates, I mean hates, driving.

I am unable to like the Macan on basic principles of being an air cooled guy. But based on the reviews and reports from car folks, Porsche has done some nice tuning to the Audi platform and produced a nice little vehicle. Its a Porsche so you can't ascribe "value" to it as transportation :-)

Having said that, I don't think we should talk about SUVs or mini-SUVs here. We should simply wait for more air cooled Porsche porn to appear and then rejoice when it does.

im not sure what the draw is. i've been in the market now for a while and it's the only thing that's interesting to me on the SUV side at the moment. my WRX isnt exactly a good family car, so that's why the look at smaller SUVs.

I'm not sure I understand the logic about looking at a small sporty SUV when your conclusion is "my WRX isnt exactly a good family car". These small SUVs are raised hatchbacks really.

I agree. It will be my New Year's Resolution to avoid being the catalyst for drifting threads off topic.

Back on topic, I mentioned before in this thread that my father took my brother's to Watkins Glen many times back in the 80's. We were quite young but I remember vividly, my favorite car - the Lowenbrau #14 Porsche 962. It just so happened that it was the car that always seemed to win because it was driven by a great driver, the late Al Holbert. When their sponsor, Miller Brewing Company switched the car to the Miller High Life livery, it just wasnt as special to me. I have so many memories of camping atop the hill at the toe of the boot. Cars screaming out of the corner and up the hill. It was awesome. We saw a lot of different cars race there but this one is the most memorable for me:

Hi guys, sorry for the lack of photos, it's been a little hectic. Here are some of the latest 935, it's almost complete. These were from about a month ago. Since then, all panels and doors are hung, decals done, electrical and plumbing to the bulkhead almost complete, and wheels are being finished this week. Engine and gearbox will be installed by the customer

I've been working on a retro 934 as of late. As much as I hate doing street cars, this will be a 95% street car with a 5% chance to running on the track. More photos to follow on this as It's had much more work done. This is just some rough fit of the fenders and a gutted interior.

Lastly, we just bought a 1990 IMSA GTO turbo that we are slowly putting back together. I despise the body styling but that is how it raced. Much needs to be done to this to make it historically correct. Like most cars, they have been hacked apart through the years when going from shop to shop. More photos as we get deeper into that project.

I want to do that style front end to mine so badly. But must not destroy bog stock value. Clearly N+1 applies to Porsches just like it does to bikes.


We need air cooled motor porn. Got anything cool like 3.5 twin-plug conversion or are those "street" type motors too mellow for you guys?

You'll retain more value if it is left stock.. tubs are gaining in value sooooooo quickly. This car started as a running 930 daily driver... probably worth more as a restored stock 930 than a beefy retro 934 hot rod. A TP 3.5 is not mellow by any means, most of our base engine builds are TP 3.2s. I just don't like doing street cars because I spend more time doing tedius crap than I would doing a ground up build for a race car lol. The only engine flick I have off the top of my mind is the TP 4.4.

Sean, the cage fit in that 912, as in all your cars, is so very nice -- tight to the pillars and body, joints accounting for the force vectors. Really good stuff.

I'm a few years from a full motor rebuild on my 3.2 Should start saving now.

Can't complain, the motor starts every time no hesitation for 25 years and no oil leaks since replacing the breather tubes. Routine maintenance seems to be the key. Keep waiting for a problem (e.g. excuse to throw $$$ at the car) but no luck :-)

Final stretch on finishing the second 935. A lot of small details still need to be done, but the heavy lifting is complete.

Glad the holidays are over, finally can get back in the shop and get work done. Hopefully you all had a good Christmas. More finishing touches on the 935, it will be delivered next week. Built the wheels, assembled the window sliders, and final install on front spoiler.

Finished up final fit on the fender flares and transitions to front bumper/spoiler on the 934....and FINALLY found a piece of rubber trim that fits the profile I was looking for to use around the flares.

This 935 is done and and safely to it's new home in California. This is a complete roller and the customer will be doing the wiring and plumbing. The car's track debut will be mid July at Road America.

Jack is a good guy and a great driver. There are a few nice videos produced about his age and garage. Worth googling if you like the P cars.
