I apologize for the bad pic. Saw two cubs climbing a tree about 20 feet off the back deck. No sign of mamma bear.

Mom was waiting for you to come out into the backyard. "You kids go up the tree and act cute. I'll make dinner."

Turkey getting ready for bed about 30' up in a pine. They use our yard for a runway. Liftoff is loud.

    Thanks for the update!

Did you wire in a recording device, or was this an open-the-lid snapshot

I still remember seeing wild turkeys fly for the first time and came away somewhat surprised it was almost a vertical lift-off, even by the fledglings. In some ways, the V-22 Osprey should really have been named after the turkey (Benjamin Franklin's original choice of national bird), as the turkey seems capable of both a runway lift-off and vertical lift-off.

There is a slot above the door for ventilation, and an iPhone fits perfectly through that slot without opening anything. I put the camera on timer, punch the shutter and slide it through the gap. I think this is the last photo I'll take. After this, it gets risky because you can cause everyone to abandon ship. They start getting jumpy as they get closer to fledging. Back when bluebirds were just returning, the houses were built with a front door and a flip up roof. Ornithology students doing data recording for studies would keep the front door closed and their hand over the entrance/exit hole. Then pop open the lid, count fast and quickly shut the lid. Still things got risky around fledge time.

    Ben Franklin was right.

Kids came back yesterday and brought mom with them. Glad I was 15’ up on the deck.

Our landscapers live on the other side of the valley, and they've had a bear destroy all their bee hives and then tear down their (very sturdy) shed to get to the trash can inside. And now they can't find the trash can, even though it is a very large heavy-duty roller can that would take some doing to drag off somewhere. Their neighbors in either direction have lost their hives and had trash cans and a large grill destroyed. So this is a problem bear and probably a big one, judging by the destruction of the grill (looks like someone used a giant can opener.) So the DEC will get called and hopefully they'll bring a trap and haul it off to the Adirondacks.

Are they making spray cans specifically for graffiti art now? I've never been able to get a line like that out of a spray can, and I used to use them for work I did in art school. There were marker cans like utilities used for laying out paths for buried cable or pipes, but those only came in orange colors usually.

I know you are poking fun, but usually moving a bear benefits the bear. Because someone on that road is going to shoot that bear if it doesn't get moved.

The next time that I'm at the restaurant that's across the street from the mural, (People's Indian Restaurant in the Garfield section of Pittsburgh) I'll ask one of the owners, Kulwant, who painted the mural and how. We were just there on Saturday night so it will be a few weeks.

This is what the local artists’ supply sells. Lots and lots of colors.

We've all heard of the "early bird" however, this one is 10 days too early........
