Default Baja 1000: Tragic Loss = Homicide

We've discussed how people screw with cyclists, setting traps in some NYC parks. I didn't realize the same sort of sick SOBs follow motorsports.

Read the third paragraph: Kurt Caselli Passes Away After Accident at Baja 1000 Racing Event | Bleacher Report

A tragic loss for the sport, but it sickens me that someone would set traps at a sporting event.

Unfortunately that is way too common at the Baja. One rule of thumb for racers is to be cautious where groups of people have gathered because a trap has been set and they're there to see the crashes.

This is a tragic event, but it appears that rumors are getting ahead of the facts. According to the first riders on the scene, Caselli's accident was not the result of a "trap."

It's pretty crazy that Baja is held on what essentially is a completely open course. It's honestly surprising that things like this don't happen more often.

Lesson learned: dont rely on CNN to convey facts!

Kurt: a giant loss. He was a very cool guy, not an enemy in the world...

But the rumor brought awareness about idiots building traps. How do you stop this? Hire the drug cartels to police the event is the best I can think of, other than pulling out of that 3rd world country all together.

That's what Dakar had to do, essentially. Just pick up and move the race.

Oh, they do - every year - sometimes it's a child in one of the villages, sometimes it's a competitor, sometimes a drunk spectator.
You don't get asked if the Uno Mil can come through your villa, you're told.
    Too bad for you.

It's a crazy thing, that race.

I rode the whole course one year on my MTB.
