    Default Hats

Forgive me if there is already a discussion on this.

I've always loved hats and sported a few hand me down fedoras over the years. We don't have many mens wear options in this neck of the woods, but a recent trip to Boston helped me tap back in.

It's summer, so I started with a fairly classic paper Trilby from Goorin Bros in Cambridge.

The other day my shop lost power (they just got it back on today), so I did a little walk about in the Victorian county seat and went antiquing. Scored a sweet cane and this vintage Philadelphia Stetson "Lightweight" Bowler. It is stamped with the local stores name, so I may be able to track down it's date, but Stetson closed the Philly plant in 71', so it's at least 46. The leather and felt are both in fantastic shape.

As I mentioned, my power has been out, so I've had some time to cruise the internet. I made a low ball offer and picked up this lovely Resistol fedora. NIB, beaver and a lovely shade of green tinted brown. Very similar to a hat my grandfather had. This will be great for autumn woods walking. Resistol stopped fedora production in 1968.

River Ure.jpgOne careful owner, I bought my fishing hat at Lock and Co., St. James's Street, London in the late 1970s and it is still going strong.

I like Goorin Bros. I bought a nice summer-weight fedora from them a few years back - It's great for protecting my increasingly-exposed pate with some style.

There's a place in my neighborhood I need to check out. But a handful of hats fulfills my needs so it may be a while.
    GO!

That bowler is pretty fresh. Not too many folks can pull that off.

It is woven wool with a close stitched (nylon?) lining. It is my favourite rain hat. It is not waterproof but it holds its shape in heavy rain and it takes a while before the rain soaks through and it does not drip like a water repellent hat.

Nice. I wonder if a bit of lanolin would re-up the wools defenses? Not that it's probably needed.

    This just arrived:

Summer weight 3x beaver Resistol "Kitten Finish" Krushable. Last one for a bit. Needs a lint clean, but it's in amazing shape, too.

I like hats myself. Wear one every day it rains or when cold. My closet holds a Dobbs Twenty in brown, a Cavanagh in mid gray, a velour-finish Wegener in navy that used to belong to my grandfather, and a steel
    gray Optimo.

I should get in on this. Bald man (me) always needs a hat, rain or shine! All my hats are cheapos as they are not very well taken care of. I spent all my free $$ on bikes! Will look for some pix, though.

DSC01795.jpgDSC01796.jpgOn the left Millars, Clifden, Connemara bought in 1970. On the right Millars, Clifden, Connemara bought on ebay this month from the USA for $18, it looks brand new. I don't think Millars make these any more.
