    Default Winter coat recommendation needed

I need a recommendation for a new winter coat:

    • Parka length – that is, not waist length
    • Doesn’t need to be waterproof, but must be windproof
    • Casual, not dressy – to be worn with jean and khakis
    • Don’t want to look like I’m at Camp IV
    • Think insulated field jackets or pea coats
    • I live in Atlanta, not Juneau

    Thanks in advance.

Second Uniqlo reference in a week. $199 down parkas, $5 undershorts.....where did this company come from?

A shop just opened by me. It was packed with shoppers. Is the stuff any good?

One of the lighter-weight offerings from Bemidji Woolen Mills should do the trick: https://www.bemidjiwoolenmills.com/d...geurs_jac_coat

A lifetime garment, made in Minnesota, for <$200. Plus, they offer a Medium Tall.

Just to blast the budget... I <3 this:

It's got a windstopper liner, and it's harris tweed (which *might* make a it a bit toasty... but is probably ok). You could nearly buy the rest of the thread at this point or this however... But I think it's awesome.

If one coat is your goal, then the recommendations above are great. I have a goose down lined parka that is the warmest coat I own. Then, the second choice is a wool car length coat that hits just above the knees.

Navy surplus peacoat. The real deal, not one of those GAP ones. Made to last.

Is this your first winter jacket from them? If not, any comments on reliability or general quality?

Where do you get legit military surplus gear? I've seen some nice stuff show up on the government liquidation auction site, but I dont really need pallets of cold weather gear. All the websites I have seen that claim to be the real deal look hokie as shit.

Can't help you on where to buy, but as one who goes to work in uniform and wears the current regulation peacoat, you're best off looking at vintage/older Navy peacoats. The adage is true here- they don't make them like they used to. The new stuff is pretty light weight and a bit... meh.

I love my waxed cotton jacket. It's from Sundance and shorter than what you want, but this one from LL Bean looks good too. Given that you're in Atlanta, you probably don't need too much insulation.

Hotlanta where Patagonia and Barbour reign supreme, if you want something different maybe check out G-Star.

Designed in Netherlands, smart details, good prices for their coats which you can dress up or down.

Uniqlo has some of the best jeans you'll ever buy for under $50. Japanese department store, but ironically the store in Soho here is their highest grossing store.

I like some of these jackets from Nau. Not sure they are in the budget though. I definitely think for a place like Atlanta, layers are the deal. Nau has a down vest that looks a lot better in person than in the photos on their site. Trim and smart looking. Get a vest and then one of the lighter jackets. Stuff is well made too.

Filson might be another place to check out, if you like the barn coat look.
