For a long time, most of my orders came from a delivery system I no longer use – the telephone. There’s an organic and almost irrefutable exchange of ideas and opinions in a phone call. Unlike emails that can be interpreted differently on different days, a conversation over the phone requires an attention span that’s a skill unto itself. The words only come to you once, and it’s your job to receive them like the professional you are. It’s all about listening to the client, writing it all down, and making intuitive choices based on the information recorded.
These are some notes taken during a week in 1980. Once I hung up the telephone, it was up to me, and only me, to make some sense of things. There are no apps you can download for making sense of things. That’s why they pay me the big bucks.
