    Default Speakers

I just finished these and got them up to the TV room yesterday and I thought I'd post some pics.

My TV room now has 15 homemade speakers. These are the surrounds.

    Here's the left and right.

So next time your significant other is complaining about all the bikes everywhere just show them this and they'll be relieved that you aren't a total nutjob.

    Very nice work!

What can you tell me about the midrange driver on the 3 way L/R speakers? I've never seen that convex design before.

What are you using to power all those wonderful looking speakers?

It looks like a Morel MDM-55 from Israel.

It is a Morel. Epicmoss knows more than I do. I thought I was going to have to look it up.

The subs are Marty Cubes which are plans freely found on the internet. The rest of the speakers are kits from Selah audio. DIY Designs — Selah Audio Rick designed the surrounds to match my L/R/C.

I haven't really wanted to mess with design too much. I have done some bluetooth speaker/amp combo designs myself but those gifts. When I want something that will really work I go with designs from people that know what they are doing.

That's great. I used to get the good stuff from the guy who imported Morel, an Israeli in Brookline.

I still have the Audible Illusions Modulus 2B I bought from Michael in '85. I haven't thought about Morel in years...

That's top notch stuff right there!!

Had a feeling those were a Selah design. That's a cool way to go - drivers and electronics as a kit and then add your beautiful cabinet work.

Rick used to do some big line arrays and then seemed to favor 3 or 3.5 way tower designs. Often incorporating the Morel 55 midrange dome. I have a pair of 3.5 - way towers that he designed around a Scanspeak tweeter, Morel 55 mid, Seas W18 and Scanspeak woof. John at Salk Sound built the cabinets and did assembly. I'm out of touch with this arena now but looks like most guys have moved to ribbon tweeters but still seeing nice 3 way tower designs (sometimes with a pair of 6.5" lower freq drivers).

    What is your center channel?

    Thanks.

The center is a Sardonyx. The L/R are Tanzanites. They use the same drivers but the Sardonyx is a sealed W-T/M-W design. Not sure why I can't find the build pics.

Rick's kits are not cheap. He builds the cross-overs and keeps that as IP or something because he makes sure that all specs on the electronics are covered up. But kits are way cheaper than buying them assembled. I could never afford all of these if I hadn't built them. It feels nice to go to the high end audio expo and listen to speakers that easily cost 3x as much but don't sound any better. Sadly most of the benefits are wasted on my shitty ears. At least the stuff I can hear is amazing.

Great job on the set up!

I made my own Klipsch corner horns...nothing like stunning small animals using a 40w tube amp...

Hey rec head, have you ever built a single-driver full range speaker? Always been curious about those . . .

Only small bluetooth speakers. I have really been looking at these Volt speakers though. They are coaxial not single driver. Denovo Audio Volt-6 Coaxial Speaker
