Any budding builders should understand that the jobs being offered are most likely as described and not a mentorship toward becoming a builder. Not to speak for Butch or Moots but I've known of many who had dreams of what working in a production shop would be and weren't realized.

Having said that this is a great chance to enter the industry, contribute in making great bikes and learn some specific skills. Andy.

I appreciate the words shared above.

Andy, what you say is very true. At the same time there is a lot of knowledge that can be gained here but these are jobs. Obviously there are advantages and disadvantages to working for a company that has people specializing is various tasks. The finish job has a hand in every aspect of completing the product to go out the door while the welding job really is welding most of the hours you are here. This really is the best way to elevate welding skills to the highest level. Benefits include paid vacation, holidays, sick days, insurance and not having to market and sell.

We do encourage everyone to understand all aspects of the process and we are all quick to share knowledge and experience. In general the way we operate is to encourage and facilitate building expertise in specific areas while being able to cross over when needed. Each of us understands that the better we each do our job the easier and better the product turns out. This challenges us to improve and gives us satisfaction daily.

The end goal and the reason we all work here is to design, build, sell, market and ride the best bikes we can make. That is what sustains all of us and why, when I look around, one of the main reasons I have gotten to work with the same great group of people for so long. Living in Steamboat doesn't suck either.

Butch, where do you guys all live? The Boat is on my shortlist of places to live, but housing seems to be a real big problem there. That would be a great job, fantastic people to hang with, great skinny and fat skiis, miles and miles of gravel grinding, but wow the rent/house note would be killers. Hope you find some good ones.

Yikes....Just did a property search. Beautful area for sure, but you definitely pay for it.

This is a challenge. There are a few deals and those of us who have been here a while sometimes can hook a newbe up when we hear about something. Housing is tight right now but when the ski area closes rentals loosen up some. That said over half the people that work here are buying condos, duplexes or houses, not because they are making a ton of money but by being tight and sometimes marrying up. Most of us see our housing as our retirement fund as well.

Man you think that is pricey? You should see what they charge (for a closet) in beautiful rural New York City.

If anyone has even the slightest ability to pull this off they need to. I would love to work with a group like this. Butch is an incredible person and so are the rest of the crew. Good luck Butch in another life we can make a bunch of cool shit together.

Thanks to everyone for the kind words. I am going to close this thread, or at least try to as I don't know what the hell I am doing. We have made a decision on the welding position and we have some excellent candidates for the finish job thanks to posting here.

I know we are the big guys on the block when it comes to handmade product, but it means a lot to have the respect of the fine builders here. We all share the same passion for quality and using talent and craft to make fun bikes. Anytime someone ventures to northwest Colorado the door is open, we would be happy to show you around the shop, the roads and the trails.
