    Default The Limits of Tailoring

Daniel Craig on SNL last week:

Where's the line in terms of fitment? Craig has played Bond, so he if he wants his jacket to fit like a muscle shirt then more power to him. But should the average fit cyclist work with a tailor who's a bit more traditional? Or is this just the new tradition?

From Pee Wee to Connery to Craig, there are a million ways to wear a suit. The point of a tailor is to make the suit match your personality or body type. There are no lines, as long as you can wear it confidently. You can draw inspiration from Thom Browne, Nick Cave, John Hamm, Cary Grant, David Byrne, or anyone else. But your suit should be an extension of you.

They're all just pants and jackets, and sometimes a vest. Solid colors or patterns. Lapels, vents, and a button or seven in front. Pool around the shoes, a one inch break, or air out those ankles.

Too tight and you can't move. Too big and you're swimming.

There are no rules set in stone. The limits exist in your head. And they are there for a reason. If you feel like a fraud, then you look like a fraud.

chasea, well put. I'm finally starting to embrace dressing up, particularly for work. the turning point was being confident enough to dress in a manner that fits my personality, not the corporate uniform I used to wear reluctantly. I no longer feel like a fraud.

Daniel Craig can wear that. I'd look like a sack of potatoes in that. To me, it looks too small, though. My take is that it is just a current trend. Then again, I know squat about fashion.

The waist suppression is too severe, but it definitely fits. Looks better in the shoulders than 98% of the suits I see.

I have a couple of nice tailored (bespoke/epic) suits but recently needed one more, so I just went and got one at J Crew, on sale. I was just a tiny bit between sizes so I sized down and the result is somewhat like that, minus the pecs.

    We're not them.
We need to work, drive, catch planes do lunch etc...in our suits or other pieces
Craig et al need to pose and stand in front of a camera.
His Bond suits don't fit like that.
It looks good for THIS purpose but he and everyone else would look ill fitted in the real world.
