Default Being a grown up is hard

Well, we've seen it coming and it finally happened, my company is closing our office. I got a nice offer to relocate to another office, but it comes with strings attached (I have to pay it back if I don't stay long enough). The other office is in a great place, but bad geographically, it's the wrong direction, further away from family, and we want to be closer.

Super thankful it's happening now and not a year ago, when the wife was working part time and in school full time. Now she's done with school and working full time, which gives us some options.

Got a week to decide what I want to do.

Going for a ride this afternoon.

Spartanburg/Greenville. Which is 6hrs from her family. We're 4hrs away now, which is farther than we'd like.

The company is in Sparklecity, but the lease on the building is up in another year or two and they'll be moving, and most likely to Greenville. If we (my wife and I) move, it'll be to Greenville.

I fly into the GSP area a lot. Seems like a nice area, especially for cycling. I think our Salonista pal Doofus lives there, as does George Hincapie. He's a rider too from what I am told.

Your family concerns probably can't be solved here but it's my understanding that you can do a lot worse as a cyclist than live around that area.

I don't really know your personal situation, so, I wouldn't presume to make a recommendation. However, I have a few friends who are Greenville natives and it seems like a great place to live.

Sounds like a tough road ahead. Family is the tough part of the equation... you can always get another job. Lay out your priorities and make the best decision you can. Best of luck with it.

I've been to Greenville area a few times when I was in college, years ago. It's not terrible and agree that you could do far worse in more ways than just cycling.

It could be worse my friend. Look at it in a positive light. They gave you an option. Greenville ain't too a bad a spot for cycling and for raising a family. Being away from family has it's down sides but can also have some positives...though it sounds like y'all don't have those kinds of issues with family. Best my friend. It will work out.

Does your wife like her job? Can she get another one easily?

What about you? Could building wheels be a full-time thing, at least for a little while?

Anyway, lovely day to take the afternoon off and go ride.

The wife has only been at her job for 3 months, but does like it. She just finished up grad school this summer. She can get another job, but not necessarily easily. I can find something here easier than she could find something there. I've got a lot of contacts here...we don't have any there.

If it wasn't for the wrong geography this would be a no-brainer decision, but being even further from family is a big drawback.

SWW is moving towards being a full time gig, sales this year were double what they were last year, but it's not ready for prime time just yet, another year or two maybe.

Today sucked. Several folks let go. This is a small office, less than 30 people, so we're a tight knit group.

But, sh*t happens, and it's not like no one saw it coming. For the wife and I, we're in a good spot for something like this to happen.

    I 100% feel you.
The lady and I are in a similar situation, but it would require leaving the PNWet, and we certainly weren't planning on that.

We have some options, but it is complicated and not at all the decisions we thought we'd be making right now.

4 hrs or 6 hrs seems no different to me. I just consider that bad traffic on a weekend.

But then I spent most of my life 14 time zones away from family.

When I think of visiting family, and being 4 hours away, I think of that being, say, Moses Lake. Not a trip I'd be making more than maybe 3-4 times a year, really. So if it were 6 hours (Spokane), it really wouldn't change how often I'd go, it just gets a little more expensive in gas to do so.

That's the thing, we'd like to get it down to about 2hrs if possible. 2hrs would put us right between both families.

Not sure I'd want to have both families that accessible...
