Hand tools needed for lugged construction.

I'm new to the forum.I build race car chassis but never a bicycle.I need a new torch and tips.Have miller xmt 304 and some gasses.Trying to get my ducks lined up to make frames for myself to start with.

I dont know how to do that.I will re post on the framebuilder site.I was alittle nervous about posting on the framebuilde site due to the vaugeness and my lack of the bicycle knowledge.I'm on flickr under marty meadors,google it.That Tommassini screw up really did it for me.I'm a builder now with a long way to go,but I am ok with it.

Marty- Welcome to the building community. Your fab skills will help the learning curve be fast. You mention needing a torch. Ox-Act? While some build all with a TIG unit most find having brazing skills are VERY helpful. So this is where you might start. Many will suggest a light weight "aircraft" style torch handle with tips having orifices of .025" through .060". Henry James Bicycles | Please pardon our mess…site is under construction is a great source for brazing supplies as well as frame parts, there are others but Hank will help guide you through the start up. As mentioned there's a lot of on line info for the looking. Videos of brazing, photo slide shows of the building process, blogs with verbal descriptions and at least three forums for the call and response. One can build frames with a minimal of tooling, a fact that's lost on many newbies. Some of us old guys can help you out here better that others with this less tooled building. Andy.

Your cool! I wasn't sure what gasses you guys use.I went to King Sachs profile and clicked on the some images word and saw his frame building and in the background was his brazing gasses.In Cali acetylene tanks are red but Sachs were black so I thought the gas Sachs was using might be a special mix or propane or natural gas(I wasnt sure).That was the reasoning behind the super basic questions.

I'm dying to know if you polish stainless lugs before brazing.Why do they get so much money for a polished stainless BB.

Marty, i get mine pre-polished from this bloke in Taipei named Ma Ying-jeou. Ma makes them to order also in .05 degree angles. i protect them from discoloration due to gasses by using a black bottle gas, no filler material and N°5 chanel for flux. the bikes are simply too beautiful to ride so no one ever knows my secret. i learned from the best.
