    Default Knives

I got the urge to try my hand at knife making a few weeks ago as a distraction from work and school. And by hand I mean with as little investment as possible.
This one required a couple of files, some sandpaper, a hacksaw, and a drill.

Heat treating was done in a makeshift forge made out of stacked fire brick and a propane torch.

I have a few others in the works, but it's slow going. Fun though.

I finished this one last night. 4 inch blade, 1095 high carbon steel, brown canvas micarta scales.

Still entirely done with hand tools other than drilling for pins.

A little Christmas present for my dad. This blade shape is generally called a "kiridashi", but functionally and ergonomically it is basically a super fancy Stanley knife without a replaceable blade. This one has a left-hand specific chisel grind

I'd keep one around though, and will probably make more of them. Everybody's got boxes to open.

Fish scale patina was done with yellow mustard. No, really.

Just some pretty pattern-welded blades to bump the thread.

Can you tell us a little bit about your process for this? I'm really interested in the same - long time collecter/admirer of knives and would love to take a shot a making a few. What was the starting material? What tools did you need? Any notes or points to useful directions would be hugely appreciated!

more to come this weekend. all materials bought from the link i posted above. so, it's more like "knife assembly and handle shaping/finishing" more so than true "knife making"

Nice. I have a similar small custom built by Busse Combat Knife Company that is great for utility work.

Peanut butter sandwich knife: designed to reach the bottom of the jar and do a perfect diagonal triangle cut.

This is number 10, so I decided to try pushing a bit. Walnut contoured grip with Birch pin, copper spacer and steel press fit double guard. Blade is reclaimed 1075 with an as-found surface finish on the flats.

    Eric,
Between the bikes, paddles, and now these knives; what exactly can you not build!?
The level of quality you achieve is simply remarkable.
Thank you for humbling the rest of us. Haha

That is the nicest peanut butter knife in existence, I think.

    Especially the little copper bolster/spacer.

    Beautiful.
