Default Rice cookers - does yours make a big mess?

I have a super-cheapo model bought years ago. It does a great job cooking the rice, but while doing so the steam and water droplets coming out of the vent hole in the top sprays all over, making a mess on the kitchen counter. It's not a huge problem, but enough of hassle that I don't use the thing as often as I would if didn't require the extra clean-up.

Do all cookers have this problem, or does yours behave better? If so, what do you have?

    TIA

Get the kind with a hinged lid that snaps shut. No problems.

Just place a towel over the hole the steam comes out. Make sure it can still vent, but that will eliminate the splatter factor.

My Zojirushi has a steam vent but does not cause a mess.

Sounds like it's time for an upgrade. Even my first cheap cooker didn't do that. I have a Panasonic now and it's perfect.

I have a Cuisinart model that my wife got for $50 at Bed Bath and Beyond...it runs like a champ. Easy cleanup and does a splendid job cooking the rice. None of that messy venting you speak of. Nice and clean.

I've got a super cheap one. It has this problem.

The solution I came up with is to put the empty veggie steamer basket that it came with in in between the lid and the rice all the time. No more mess.

    Hope this helps.

Had a cheapie that did that. It has since been replaced with a nice Sanyo that doubles as a slow cooker with hinged snap-shut lid and the problem has ceased. If the term "gluing tubulars" is in your vocabulary, it is time to upgrade.

Am I the only cretin that still uses a saucepan on the stove to cook rice?

See other rice thread ;) That is my #1 fav. way to cook a pot of rice. Nice heavy cast enamel pot on low. Wonderful. Way better than any rice cooker.

I had the same unit and same problem. Also it made some pretty sticky rice. I have seen others that made great rice and could keep it ready to go all day. This is a great resource for healthy eating.

    Wo which is the one?

We got the Sanyo ECJ-HC55S from Amazon. Several years of frequent use without a hiccup.

I remember watching Justin Wilson when I was younger, Whoo Son that's some mighty fine cookin. When he'd sit down and dig in at the end of the show...mmhmm I'd get hungry.

Just drape a paper towel over the vent hole and use a piece of flatware over the towel to keep it from falling off. To cook it properly, use the correct amount of water, determined by a bit of experience.

My aunt got a Tatung as a wedding present about 45 years ago. Still uses it. The modern ones won't last like this.
Stove top, copper pot or cheap Walgreens one work.
