Default NYC people - help; Mexican Food ?

maybe not the right place to ask this?

long story short, by local mexican restaurant changed owners, cooks, etc, and they are no where near as good. the wife and i love good mexican food. I know NYC isnt exactly the mecca of mexican cuisine, but anyone in the area recommend a good mexican place in manhatten?? i'm talking sit-down type of place to bring the family and enjoy a good meal, not a grab-and-go taco burrito typed place. thanks in advance.

No. What you ask for doesn't exist. I go to LA or Mexico once a year.

This would have been my suggestion but guess we all eventually move on down the road.

Well, it's not Mexican, but i hope that you frequent Havana Sandwich Cafe, seeing as though it's just down the street.

Also, check out Casa Maya right off the Great Swamp. Not sure what town - Long Hill maybe?

Btw, if you really want Central American food in tri-state, I think Port Chester is the best bet.

    Barrio Chino
    Empellon
Haven't tried El Toro Blanco... yet.

In Billyburg it's all about La Superior.

Has the phenomenon called the "California Burrito" hit NYC yet? I'm talking about a super burrito, but with french fries instead of rice. They're everywhere here now.

Some other choices are Toloache and Cascabel Taqueria. Also, a bit pricey to bring the kids, but Pampano is very good, especially for seafood. I agree with Christian that Port Chester is great for a variety of food choices, from the hole-in-the-wall to the hip to the high end.

That place was the best! Too bad she had to close it down.

Try Café el Portal (174 Elizabeth Street). It's as good as you'll currently find in Manhattan.

I have pretty much no frame of reference (except that the best burrito I ever had was in San Diego years ago, the only time I've ever been to the west coast), but Tortilleria Nixtamal in Queens is pretty highly regarded. I've been a few times and can't complain.

Los Gemelos for straight up Mexican. Bartaco is good. Coyote Flaco gets good reviews. I only found it good.

What was the name of the joint in San Diego? I'm at some Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf in Del Mar right now.
