Default Why do people go to shows just to talk/text the whole time?

I was just reminded last saturday why I hate people so much. My fiance and I went to see the Antlers at Webster Hall which was a great show except for other people talking during the entire thing. One dopey girl had her back turned to the stage the whole time was regaling her BF who was texting her and what they were sending. I dont have a problem talking between songs or even talking quietly to each other but standing a foot away from each other and having a conversation almost a shouting level through out the entire performance is rediculous.

Get these damn kids off my lawn!

Or filming the entire show while standing, turning and moving side to side to follow the performer, now and then to get a better shot holding the camera up over head. Dance, wave your arms, that's cool. Blocking everybody behind you so you can be a youtube star? Bite me.

Holding a camera is one thing, when they do it on an ipad at a seated concert, now that is taking the piss.

Because the dopamine rush they get from using their phone is better than the rush they get from watching the band. People are addicted to their phones and the validation/gratification they get from "likes" on FB or instagram, etc. Honestly I think a lot of people go to concerts just to say they did, not out of a desire to actually see/hear the performers.

My wife and I recently saw Band of Horses at the Ryman. That is all you need, that is the show. This shit was everywhere.

However, the first 2 songs the girl next to me belted out every lyric. My wife knows me and kept looking over at me. Finally she said, " go ahead." I looked at the girl between songs and told her if I wanted to hear her sing, I could have saved a shit load of money and just come to her house. She never said another word. Did I feel bad, not at all.

It's the generation. I bet this shit doesn't happen at a Motley Crew concert.

No, it really doesn't. Also, the crowd that would go see a Crue show wouldn't stand for that shit. Woe be unto your nasty ass should you try that at a Motorhead show.

    Yes it does.
    DON'T JUDGE ME.

Sunny Day Real Estate used to stop playing if people smoked during the show. This was the mid 90s when you could still smoke indoors.
At the Drive-In would stop playing if people moshed. "You're here to fucking watch us. If you wanna act like an idiot, we'll have you removed."

    Bands need to step up.

I was at an Ozomatli show here a while back. A couple of bros started fighting up near the front. Band stopped playing until they knocked off the fighting. Good on Ozo. They are the good guys AND put on a great show.

Do others still throw their underwear on stage? Ap propos? (How do you spell that). Or how do you look up a word you can't spell?

    More importantly, underwear?

I was at a show a couple years ago and at the end of the set I saw someone I worked with (who didn't know I was at the show) get up on stage and take her shirt off. That made for an interesting conversation on Monday. But to answer your question, yes, underwear.

I have a live Fugazi concert where they stopped the show to tell people to stop "pushing up onto people". Lady Gaga would encourage that shit yo.

I just saw Queen at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, CT. The texting, the videotaping, yeah; it was happening all the time. People snapping photos then immediately sending them to Facebook, their buddies, or wherever they go. They're either bored or way too self-important.

I'll be seeing Motley Crue there in October. Can't imagine it will be any different.

The real story here is that you *listened* to Fugazi, instead of simply listing them as inspiration for your band.

But hey... the kids are allright. It doesn't bother me because rock and roll is shit to listen to live anyway (seriously, you're putting a mic on that snare in this 100 person club? bite me) and you're there for the experience and the show. People can enjoy it as they like, even if it's not for me. You think all those people in the $1000 orchestra seats for Götterdämmerung are there to soak in the art?
