you could, it's pretty easy. I didn't really pick it up until college, and I taught myself just by doing it. being the woodshop tech and having lots of time to screw around helped :)

I have trouble with straight lines unless I had a table saw with guides and all that jazz.

antlockyer, it's all guides. you just gotta know how to use them, and when you need to make your own. i certainly don't freehand those things.
