Default OT: what do you feed your dog?

Our dog is getting old, and she is having some stomach issues. After seeing the vet, my wife went into deep research and identified what Lucky needs. I was to get them today during my trip for other errands.

3 different types of kibbles and 2 types of canned food, plus plain yogurt. It took me some time in this special feed store to locate all of them in the right flavor, etc.....

This dog has a good life. And none of these can be found in a chain store.

    What do yours eat?

My dogs eat Natural Balance dry kibble ... found at independent pet stores only. All natural ingredients with less common proteins and starches to avoid allergy issues.

i'm a fan of the "barf" diet for dogs. "bones and raw food" that is.

more fan than practitioner. i use surplus and "waste" from game animals in the fall, other times try to get trimmings and out-of-date stuff from the butcher. when i have more freezer space i'll be able to extend the "happy season" for the dogs. they get too much corn-based kibble.

We have two 5.5 year old Airedale Terriers who are lunatics. We've been told that BARF was where it's at but found it sort of hard to organise every night. We alternate each night between kibble one night and raw mince mixed with grated vegetables and raw egg.

They also get a bone every day, either a lamb shank or or a brisket. We figure these are cheaper than replacing our wooden deck every other month. Our vet reckons that their diet has kept them and their teeth in fantastic shape.

my now 14 year old shih tzu (chinese breed) had been having all sorts of physical problems
until i brought her to this guy ---> Dr. Marty Goldstein - Meet Dr. Marty

domino is now on a structured program of food and dietary supplements
and she is incredibly engaging, healthy and spry - all her specific problems resolved without surgery or drugs

in addition to specific supplements, live culture cottage cheese and flaxseed oil, she gets
cans of instinct brand grain free and innova brand senior with glucosamine and chondroitin
as well as eight of these nuggets as treats every day ---> Dr. Bob Goldstein's Daily Health Nuggets | Natural & Holistic Vitamin Supplement For Dogs & Cats - Earth Animal

here's dr. marty's view on food for pets ---> Dr. Marty Goldstein - Dr. Marty's Feeding Advice
but be careful identifying with brands over time since there has been much consolidation in the industry
procter & gamble acquires a brand, changes the formula to reduce costs, then issues recall for salmonella concerns

btw, among dr. marty's patients are the pets of oprah winfrey and martha stewart

Blue Buffalo brand. It's labeled organic and doesn't use by-products. Lots of healthy protein, grains, and fruits and veggies.

We also feed him veggies that we are preparing for dinner each night. He absolutely loves carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, tricolor peppers, etc. Last night we had salmon for dinner, and I gave him some of that, too. I'll usually pick out some chicken or fish that we're preparing and slip him a couple of bits (usually when my wife isn't looking).

We don't feed him too many treats, but those that he gets are made in the USA and are organic. We have some Newman's treats that he likes.

This is not a discriminating dog, however. The rivers of drool will start flowing at just the mere mention of food.

Sounds like lots of dogs living well here.

Lucky had become less tolerant with bones. The last time we gave her a lamb shank, she had bad stomach for more than a week.

Diamond Premium dry with a tablespoon of plain fat free yogurt. I've had two different breeders recommend Diamond brand and have heard just as many more say it is trash. You want to start a fight? Ask which food is best on a dog training forum. Much worse than campy vs. shimano.

I'd love to know what Alec feeds his hounds. Disturbed, what do your dogs get?

I’m ignorant when it comes to dog food. Been feeding our pup Hill’s Pet Science Diet for the last year since that what she was on when we got her. Recently have been doing some learning and beginning to make a switch- apparently Hill’s puts vets through school in exchange for pushing their products once the vets are out and set up practice.

She’s healthy and at a good weight with a bowl of kibble topped with 1/3 can of canned food twice each day (supplemented by scraps and bits of whatever meat/fish we’re eating.) But now I’m looking for something better that won’t break the bank. I also put a splash of milk in her bowl on days that she's inclined to eat the canned food and leave the kibble untouched.

    Free to Good Home...

Excellent guard dog. Owner cannot afford to feed him anymore, as there are no more drug pushers, thieves, murderers, or, molesters left in the neighborhood for him to eat. Most of them knew him as "HOLY SHIT!!!"
